Freeing slaves?
I noticed that after I purchased 2 guys from pirate merchant they are tagged as "slave" in the social tab. They are not different from any other colonists I have, but it's bugging me. Can I make them non-slave colonists?
Not sure if you're still looking for an answer, I was, and couldn't find anything helpful, here or elsewhere. I was able to figure out however, that you can change this be modifying your save game. (If you haven't done anything with it, it's in your

LocalLow/LudeonStudions/Rimworld by Ludeon Studios/Saves

folder, and you can open it with notepad) You then need to find the colonist in question. I recommend Ctr-F and

<nick>NICKNAME</nick>

(for example <nick>Sol</nick>). Given that I was doing this without instructions, I changed three spots, only the one of which may be necessary. The one that ultimately fixed it was to change

<kindDef>Slave</kindDef>

to

<kindDef>Colonist</kindDef>

. There were also two places with

<kind>Slave</kind>

which I replaced with

<kind>Colonist</kind>

however, I do not believe that the latter is necessary. Ultimately, I just searched "Slave", found the colonist in question and changed everything "Slave" to "Colonist".
I will mention I am using some mods that change slavery, which may have partially been responsible, or resulted in my doing something extra that you won't see. For various reasons, I find that improbable.
Lastly, if you haven't touched your saves before or aren't sure you trust what I've found, I recommend either copy/pasting everything you change to a separate document, so you can find and replace it easily, or go into the game and make a back-up save.

Thank you for your in-depth answer!
I think if the only way to change it I will just let it be, but I am grateful nonetheless!

purchased Slaves in this game arent real slaves
Care to elaborate?
All of the purchased slaves (usually) have the same treatment as other colonists.

I know this is technically a necro, but for those confused and thinking buying slaves makes you a slaver, they always get the "Freed from slavery" mood buff when bought, which makes no sense for the game to still classify them as a slave under the social tab. This post thankfully helped me remove the slave tab from the 86yo granny a saved from slavers. she was the only one out of the 2 slaves ive bought to save, who have had the tag. despite them both getting the mood buff. No one treats granny like that.

I don't know what I hate more.
The fact that I remember everything here clearly,
or that you called my year old post necro. I see people comment on 4+ years old stuff, this is so much pain! :larry:

Not sure if this answers your question but if you imprison a slave and then recruit them, they become a full non-slave member of your colony

Holy Necro, Batman!

Not only did you answer to a problem solved iterations before but you also did answer tto something you can literally read in the slaves' tab 'Emanzipate'.

Appreciate it, but there were no slave slaves back then, just full on colonists marked as "slave" in the relationship tab. :larry:

How to "free a slave" (entirely in-game): taking them to the BBAR
Step 1: Buy a slave.
Step 2: Banish that slave.
Step 3: Arrest that slave.
Step 4: Recruit that slave (preferably after brow-beating them into joining your ideoligion).
You now have the same person, but they're not a slave anymore, they're a COLONIST...

it is entirely possible that in the 5 years since this thread was created that they've either figured it out, or encountered this mod like a year ago: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2887124861

Yes, you can free your slaves! If your Pawn is enslaved, there should be a tab in the bottom-left corner that says "SLAVE". Click on that and look for a toggle button that says "EMANCIPATE". Once you click that, a Pawn assigned to perform Warden Work will free him.

If you are talking about the character' Social Tab, that is also easy. Every Pawn has a Title based on their Backstory. Your Pawn probably had a Childhood or Adulthood Backstory that says they were once a slave. Don't worry, because your Pawn is a freeman, that just shows you from where he came and why he is like he is.

You can rename a Pawn's Title very easily. Look on the top-right of the window that opens when you click the Tab that says 'BIO". You should see what looks like a "input text" cursor that you would see in "Microsoft Word" when you hover your cursor over letters. Click that, and the prompt will ask you to give the Pawn a new title.

Type anything you want, and then confirm it. Your Pawn will no longer have the Title of "Slave".

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
