So, which shields? Regular, Impact, or Aegis?
Note, I did say SHIELDS, not deflectors.

Regular: is just that

Impact: double capacity, double recharge time

Aegis: (had to be looted?) half capacity, half recharge time

I generally got for impact myself. Though I wish for a more detailed shield display, maybe a bargraph, so I can know when did the hits start to hit armor.

I always go for impact. I tend to get in close right up to ships and ram them while letting my mining lasers do the work. Before I do that I let my long range broadsides and merc take ships out from a distance. If I was hit and run I might do aegis but it's not my playstyle.
Since i really love broadside combat and complex battle situations vs multiple, possibly superior enemies, i'm using those fast-recovering aegis all the time. If in trouble, pull out by null-grav-boosting. Btw these are regularly sold at any Red Devil Station near you.
In Lategame you will learn that the Type will not matter.
i use regular Shields on my Blackgate.
Know your Tagret !
Learn where the Broadsidebays are.
Then rush into the blind Spot where he can't use them.
I prefer dreads so I use field impact. As mentioned above- you can buy Aegis shields from any pirate station

It depends on your needs and playstyle. Field Impact is best for ramming, because it'll survive through a longer duration of forward shield abuse against the enemy ship. It also absorbs burst damage more effectively, so it's effective against powerful beams and torpedos. On the other hand, Aegis is better against fighters, because they'll fly above or below the combat plane and strike all your shield arcs, especially attacking in groups. Higher regen means your already weakened shields will fare better against fighter bombardment.

Basically it comes down to mathematics for general usage. It takes a significant length of time (I think it was almost 15 seconds?) for the regen of Aegis to catch up to the initial capacity of Field Impact. Aegis only works better if you're planning on taking sustained fire to an arc over a long period of time, like with the biggest player ships.

I like the mid sized faster ships. Zip in, stay on their six, zig-zaging back and forth. Get tagged hard, zip out then back. Thats why I use Aegis so I can get back to the fight faster.
