Generally though, you'll just cycle through them because they need some input from the player.
Alternatively, you can click on a unit, click it's name and it will give a list of all units that you can select.
And to go further, and a bit better, than the unit list provided via the method donald23 mentioned, I highly recommend this mod, which as one of its reports give a great 'unit list':

Which is why either such a mod can improve things, or you rely on the actions that your units need.

For sure, love that mod as well.
I usually don't need the unit list, and rely on the actions being requested by the game. The unit list is best used when you want to find a fortified unit, as they will not come up via the next unit action. In that case the unit list is invaluable.
Short answer... try the period (full stop) key first. That's generally the default.
