Whats the point of buying them, what are they for? =o

From what I understand, they're used for Free Play single player as potential opponents for you to play against.
Outside of that, they're there for collecting and are necessary for an achievement.

There are two kinds: the level-restricted ones and the cheaper, non-level restricted ones. From what I heard, the cheaper ones are only to complete your binder and have no use. The expensive, level-restricted ones allow you to play as those characters (monsters only, no bosses) online.

how do you select a differenct character though?

From deck creation, if you have several characters available use the arrows next to the character portrait up top.

only apparently after you clear the missions. Why are the 4 starting game pieces not available in MP right out of the gate?
