(edited: help not needed anymore) Vegetable garden please help
(Edited 11/25/17: I know what the vegetable garden does now thank you for dropping by though)

(old post below)
I barely played the game some and I am at the 8th or 9th day so please try not to spoil as much as you can. I am questioning whether a vegetable garden is even worth making.

To make one, you need a gears and lot of components and wood to make an herbal garden, then you gotta upgrade it into the vegetable farm which costs gears and a lot of wood and components again, but then even after you have it, it costs 10 freaking water and 1 fertilizer just to make veggies.

It costs 10 water and 1 fertilizer just to make veggies. I dont even know how much veggies you get either. It would feel terribly dumb to use 1 meat or 1 veggie just to make 1 fertilizer and use 10 waters just to make 1 veggie again...im assuming it should produce at least 2 or more veggies for all the resources and time it takes to produce veggies.

Please can anyone help clarify how vegetable farms work exactly? And if you think if it is worth it? I personally feel like it is better just to make multiple traps for meat since veggies you cannot cook without meat. I plan to make a sustainable base that could theoretically last forever if it had to. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

You can grow either a set of 4 or 8 vegetables in one sitting, depending on how much fertilizer and water you use.

okay so im guessing 1 fertilizer equals 4 vegetables? that makes more sense but i just didnt know how much you actually get since the garden doesnt tell you or doesnt display it well enough. Thanks for the reply.

Though I just realized that there is a 2 trap limit :(

It takes 72 hours to grow 4-8 veggies.
Traps take upto 72 hours as well
Some characters can lower both the times

What is the vegetable garden limit?

It has a limit of 8 veggies at a time.

Go to your garden, use fertilizer and water and grow either 4 or 8 veggies. Either way, it takes 72 hours (or 3 days to go by in game) If you have no fertilizer, you can easily convert existing food/veggies into said stuff.

It is worth it, because when cooking food, you can use less resources (water? meat?) by making two meals at a time. You can also leave left over food on the stove and eat it another time.

You can also trade veggies for other supplies.

whats the best way to get fertilizer, i need so much fertilizer for the traps, even if i had a veggie garden, i will have a problem, cuz i use fertilizers only for trap bait. and will have none left for the garden

What I do is when i catch something in my trap, its 2 meat so i just put one of those meat as a trap. You can also turn meat into fertilizer if you want to use fertilizer to grow veggies or something that needs fertilizer specifically. If you need extra fertilizer, you can find them from looting, stealing, trading. I think you can also turn veggies into fertilizer as well and you get like i think 6 or 8 veggies per harvest, so you should be able to at least give up a veggies or two for a fertilizer or two. Hope that helps

I rarely use fertiler for trap bait. It is much more valuable for growing veggies. I also use one of the two meat I get from the trap to reset it. With two traps going you should be able to keep your people fed with what you catch and what you scav/trade for. Once you get the veggie garden up and you have enough water to grow 8 at a time you will have more food than you know what to do with.

What you say is true @von streed, but fertilizer is easy to make. It's literally just 1 piece of meat or veggie if you have the garden to convert them into fertilizer. But yes much easier if you just use 1 of the meat you caught as bait.
