Game's pretty now tho at least...
That does not make sense and is easily disproven by other games with seasonal content: many racing games recycled the seasons into offline events after some time as it expanded the value of the game. Expeditions help discover new features in the game while incentivising the return of older experienced players. This makes the events a positive experience. There's nothing preventing a return of older expeditions or having an alternate way of unlocking the content later on especially given the many updates recently.
Your point might possibly be valid if you were making it about a game that didn't have an almost 6 year history of free upgrades.
I got No Man's Sky last year after the Desolation update (it was on sale; I'm cheap) and I figured it was at the end of its update cycle (already over twice as long as that for most games), but there have been four more updates since I bought it, and they don't appear to be slowing down.
You got your core game, with your main save.., now instead of just farming and mining the same things, you get to go on these temp expeditions, for free, and unlock some cool ♥♥♥♥ for your main account.
If you were late for the party now, I bet you won't be late for the next one. School fees paid.
Guess you don't like cool stuff
To each their own. I thought it looked great and fits really nicely whenever I see it in the game, especially when it first appeared in the sky of the final expedition planet, that was epic!
I absolutely loathe "for a limited time only" artificial pressure. It only serves to create anxiety, dread, and an arbitrary and capricious fear of missing out. ESPECIALLY since you gave no advance warning, and the quest is bugged for many reportedly.
