I don't think those can be made pets.

Can't tame those. I believe all water based animals, several ground burrowing and some flying animals also cannot be tamed. You're actually pretty limited.

An animals "diet" is just meaningless flavor text. Creature pellets is the only thing that can be fed to animals, with the exception of mechanical creatures.... those eat batteries.
