Having problems with the autophage questline.

So I recently got started on the autophage questline and it was going smoothly, I thought. Got a blueprint for a Fiberglass grip, made that and then the quest ( Audience with the autophage) tells me to go to different systems to search for other autophage camps, ok, I've visited 34 systems, spoken to all of the autophage npc's and given them gifts to increase my standing but I still cannot assist them due to insufficient standing and after searching the internet I am suppose to have gotten a blueprint for a new staff piece long ago? I have no idea what I'm doing wrong so if someone has any suggestions they would be most welcome.

You have to build 3 parts and then combine them to build a staff. Once you've done that and also completed the other half of the autophage mission you'll be able to accept tasks from them.

Make sure you have the correct mission selected in your log before you land and interact with them on a new planet (the game has a nasty habit of swapping missions for you when you're not looking). If you don't have that mission selected, you'll just get the basic responses from them when you talk to them instead of the next stage of the mission to build another part of the staff...which sounds like what might be happening to you?
