But it was unlucky to lose sight of it.
In the NMS it is very difficult to find something you found by chance without a marker. (I would say it is almost impossible.)
Let's pretend it wasn't there and move on!
I went back to that planet once a day at least to use some maps. I managed to pump up that # of days in hostile environment counter from about 4 to 36, and found 77 waypoints. I named the Planet Mirage due to me seeing strange visions in a storm.
You didn't give up.
I admire your perseverance. Amazing.
BTW. I found one once while in the middle of another mission. I immediately landed and dropped a beacon. Then proceeded with the equally / more important business I was on. (It was the acquisition of of a different Interceptor via a different clue string.)
I've gotten lost many times following a pirate raid like you describe and lost track of what I was looking for. I've gotten in a habit of droping a save beacon before I take off to fight, so I can come back and pick up where I was.
It is quicker, less trouble to hit "F", then "E" to drop a Nav Marker.
You only want the marker for the duration of the pirate battle, after all.
Also, the Nav Marker is more visible when you are close to the planet / location.
