More childhood fantasy than sci-fi. Imagine kids taking inspiration from it and aspiring to be astronauts, only to get stoned by the fact the universe isn't like the game one bit.
You hit the nail on the head wth the term "Sci-Fi"
Science Fiction.
The game was always pushed as a leap into the amazing rather than reality.
The game would be rather dull with all the planets being airless lumps of rock and ice for the majority.
Gas giants would be nice.
Even games like ED are very loose with reality.
