There are more than one type of Vortex Cube and they look extremely different from each other. Cubes have been found appear that have a trapezoid shape, with a circular hole in it surrounded by a line of white light. Others are tall trapezoid structure along with a floating red square spinning above it.
I have yet to find a pattern, just found them randomly
If you want to farm them easily you have to salvage a "Beam impact theta", you will get a "special" vortex cube : this one can stack up to 100! You just have to take care not to sell them all and to keep one in your inventory.
If you fine the pedestal ones only, I use this technique : pick one up and kill the sentinel dog and one sentinel. Keep one sentinel alive and run to pick other cobes. Just make shure the one alive sentinel is at a good range : too close, it will shoot you, too far, it will despawn.
Good farm
Found some in a Green system. I don't think there's a hard and fast rule but the red, green and blue stars make certain things more likely (like rare resources).
the ones on the ground never got me attacked collecting them
the ones on plynths did
The problem with vortex cubes, gravatino balls, etc. is that they don't normally stack so collecting enough to have when you need to use them to build and upgrade is pretty difficult. There is or was a bug that starts a stack by harvesting crashed ships.
However, there is a MUCH easier and more satisfying way of dealing with the problem. The mod community has put out a mod available on Nexus and other sites called StackResize. It lets you modify exosuit or ship stacks independently, upgrade charge size, etc. (through an ini file) So you can keep the vanilla stack sizes but it will give you the ability to stack previously unstackable items without the crashed ship bug. I highly recommend it. Note; it does require an andditional mod called NMS Extender but the Stack Resize mod author is working on a .pak version as well.
