Searching for a star system by name
Is there a way to search for a specific star system by name rather than just moving around in the galaxy map?

I haven't found any reasonable way to search/browse the galaxy map. God I hope I am wrong and someone has an answer. You would think a game based on such a vast set of galaxies there would be better tools. I plop down a base anywhere I care about since the teleport list is limited and pushes old locations out.

If it is on your discoveries list, you can create a custom waypoint to it. You set it in the discovery listing.

If you have never been there, see if you can get the glyphs or the coordinates. You can portal there or use the coordinates to travel there by warp. (see Pilgrim Star Path website)

The easy way is to portal there. You can convert coordinates to glyphs.

If you only have a name and no way to get glyphs or coordinates, you are screwed.

I have to say that it looked that way to me. I guess I won't be able to visit systems when someone just gives a name. Glyphs and coordinates are so practical after all. Why have names at all? Too bad...

Thanks for the replies!

It would probably take a long long time to get back a result if there was a name search. Plus the name can be changed so the database would have to be checked for the original and player substitute. Literally millions of names in each galaxy. The coordinates have a logic progression in the 3D matrix of the galaxy. If you know your way around them you can actually place yourself on a specific planet in a system (assuming it exists) If not you get the "approximate location closest to the planet you requested. (via portal).

On a similar note, has anyone re-found a star system that you named on a different character?

I'd be satisfied if searches were limited to the current galaxy and would consider a universe-wide search to be an unreasonable request. I have no such difficulties getting a result when searching for a star system name in Elite Dangerous. The ED galaxy comprises some 4.5 billion star systems. That's a quick search.

You're right about name changes. I wonder what the statistics are regarding how many players change star system names.

It's OK. NMS is its own game. It's not that big a disappointment.

Hi man, it's like 6 months later but I was hoping you could answer me a question.
How do I set a custom waypoint to a system I've already visited? I'm in the discovery listing but it doesn't seem to be a button to it so I'm kind of confused.

Hover your mouse over the system name on the Discoveries page, read what it says in the floating window with options.

It really doesn't take much processing power to look up a name in a database. Even with millions of entries. And don't say 18 quintillion, the majority of world are still undiscovered so they don't need to be on this table.

oh for a filter that actually works to reduce the map clutter. all these do is color code. we need options like this to change the mess this game call a map into a functioning tool of navigation.
Hide all stars out of Range
Hide all stars except for this color
Hide all Stars except for this race
Hide all stars except for this economy rating
Hide all stars except for this economy type
Hide all stars except for this combat rating
Add marker to star for future reference. perhaps indicating the presence of something unique that you want to explore later.

If you activate all of these options together it should be relatively simple to focus on finding specific things like a vikeen system with a three star economy. all of this information is already present you just have no option to focus on what you want.
