Thought I'd chime in here. But I have a theory that all types of weapons should be easy to find provided you're not looking for very specific traits. Did you find this weapon because you were frantically searching for it? Or did you stumble into it just on an off chance you happened to arrive somewhere? Stations of all places give the lowest chances because they're by design easy to seek out and visit.
Your theory certainly matches my experience (over 7k. hrs since launch) - I follow a similar method when looking for freighters and/or ships that I want - I check all stations I stop at, and will usually check out planets for places too, as I do other stuff - scanning and some harvesting as desired, exploration has rare rewards.
Of my current saves, 1 is my original save, and on the other, I found on my start planet, first a B24, then an A24 and finally an S24 Experimental MT in the first 3 settlements I visited, before I had any units and very basic tech. Unfortunately not including the marker beacon.
Finally found the location by leaving a comm. ball there (which was not visible to me) and yelling for help on this forum, and was helped when someone visited the planet, could see my comm. ball and left one I could see at the site. Out of the 6 S class MT's I have in these two saves, that is the only "search" I have done for a MT - even when I have all I want, I still like looking to see what's locally available.
So, I don't "stumble" into finding stuff, rather just keep a "weather eye" out for what providence WILL bring.
