keep talking to NPC's until you get one that offers a multitool as a reward. Vykeen are the easiest to notice (two cowardly Vykeen's events give you a multitool if you accept) but Gek/Korvax also have them.
If you dont like the tool offered, or if you *do* like it, but the slot layout isnt very good simply end the conversation then reload. That NPC will still offer you the same weapon, but if you talk to another NPC of the same race that is ELIGIBLE for dynamic events, they will offer you the same event but a different multitool.
Each System has about 5-7 different named tools, and each tool can have a couple classes. Each planet can iirc have up to 4 different named tools and generally only one planet in the system is eligible for Alien/experimental (if any).
For example, you only talk to station NPC's who offer you junk pistols/rifles. after a few systems one of the NPC's offers you a 22 slot B class experimental, but the two missing slots are right in the middle messing up the layout. You then head down to the planet(s) looking for shelters or any building with NPC's in talking to each of them until you get offered the same experimental, but it will have a slightly different layout (and may also be C class or A/S class). Once you find one, you can either accept it, or reload again and continue searching. If you do reload remember to place a beacon so you can find that NPC again (if you give up searching).
The above example is what i did with my multitool posted above, the station NPC offered me the same weapon, but with 21 slots instead of 22 and the 3 missing slots were in the middle row instead of the bottom.
of course you could always just mod one in, but i find it more fun to explore around.
Still, even with that its a heck of a lot more effort to find multitools than it is ships. It also makes going to new systems and exploring the planets a real option if one of the station guys offers you an alien or experimental which is a positive thing :)
I didn't know about the crashed ships having multitools either (even though very rare) so it's possible I'm just missing something.

is it better to get a high class low slot or a low class high slot ? do the upgrades make up for the poor stats on a low class?
You can also get multi-tools on the planets from all the singledock buildings and very rarely at crashed ship sites.
Also i dont know if it helps but a friend of mine got their alien multi-tool from a Scientific/Advanced system. So i found my own system with those same specifications and i have found 4 alien tools and 2 experimentals. It would be good to know if others try this and see if they get one.
If anyone is on PC and is in the Buddulungr Galaxy or can get to this galaxy i have the portal address to this system where i am getting all these cool weapons.
