Its not a bad idea to save the rusted metal and sell it when you first start out.
Every little helps unit wise at the beginning of a save.
It is much easier to run into a cave and collect the artifacts there, or look for Humming Eggs. And sell that stuff.

the green goo can be refined 5 times to obtain nanite clusters. first 4 rouns refine at 1:1 ratio and the last nanite run refines at 5:1 ratio.
if you have double or triple slot refiner you can mix goo with coprite to obtain gold. nice pun HG btw :P - gold from goo and poo.
