Your going to have to go to differeant systems. Not all haulers can be 48 slot, only the big ones, and they arn't in all systems. So land at a space port, check the haulers as they come in, a C grade in 45 slots can be found in an A or S in 48 slots.
Typical farming of a ship is just waiting there and checking each ship until an S comes in. Me, I like to go to trading posts in the same system, they sometimes have ships that don't land at the station normally. But the ship rotation is faster, you can see the ships comming in as they fly in circles around the post. I reload about every 20 min to refresh the line up.
Best of luck.
Edited to add, no we cannot get rid of any of our ships at this time. You can turn off build restrictions and add landing pads to you freighter base.
The only way to get rid of unwanted ships is save game editing, and it's tricky business. When you swap freighters, ships you own won't appear until you resummon it.
also i've finally found a system that has a hauler i like the look of and every time i reload it hasn't gone below 40 slots so i'm gonna stick at it and keep my fingers crossed
My 48 slot hauler took the longest of all my S grades, don't give up, it will come in
Get a freighter, get 5 crappy free ships.
Go to a space station, buy an A or B class hauler, fly it back to your freighter, get into a crappy ship, and retrieve your original ship which should still be in the space station. keep doing this, but using your most expensive ship.
If you fly right out, switch 1 ship, and fly back, your ship will still be there. (do not leave your new ship in the station, it will disapear, leave your original ship)
From what i have seen haulers are the highest priced in general, but i have yet to see all the S classes with specific slot counts and configurations that could be more expensive.
This is the fastet way to get 4-6 maxed/nearly maxed haulers. Theres no reason to keep passing up viable ships that are 1 or 2 slots off, especially if you can afford the A class ones or an S class one. You are essentially buying everything under its price, at the expense of time.
trading out, doesn't lose money, especially if your trading up in slots or quality, because you will remain with both ships...with the method above.
please save game though, because mistakes and random things could happen. but this does work.
I've come across quite a few 48 slot A class haulers at the trade post I'm at atm.
In more detail: The system I'm in has 3 variations of haulers, 2 of which don't even reach 35 slots, the one I like thankfully never has below 40 slots when I reload the save. So should I stay where I am or move on?
I only have 130 million units man, not enough for the hauler I want plus doing this method unfortunately
No I don't think so , it is randomly determined what will be in the system, but then it will stay so once you are in the system with only slight variations.
Take note of all NPC names when you visit space stations, trading posts or else. Take a lot of time there and wait for every NPC to come back at least once. This can take some time though. The same NPCs will have different slot ships when appearing in different locations, but the difference is small, a few slots maybe, but still the same ship category and class.
What's important is: There are only a LIMITED NUMBER OF NPCs in each system. If you have seen them all, then MOVE ON TO NEXT SYSTEM. If you have seen it all and everywhere, then change the system if you didn't find what you want, because you WON'T FIND suddenly a S-Class or 48-slot if you ddn't before.
On the other hand, if you see a 48-slot and then you walk away, you can still find it afterwards. Just remember the NPC name and location and come back later.
All this is really simple, it's just a matter of patience and systems visited.
Edit: I wanted to make sure I didn't waste time, so I made this:
Spreadsheet[docs.google.com]
Well, that's interesting, I know there can be slight changes in a specific NPC's ship, but I didn't know that the class can also change. But your odds are bleak: Finding a 48-slot Hawler is not too common, but finding a 48-slot AND a S-Class one you really need a big portion of luck I think...
I'm not sure they are that bleak though, here's a record of the ships I encounter, each new row is a new reload:
Spreadsheet[docs.google.com]
I can assure you though, if you want that ship in an S, it will show eventually. Checking each one is the only way.
Your ratio is way different then my last. Mine kept showing up in B, C was actually as rare as A. So I'm thinking it's possible each ship gets its own spawn ratio.
