There are LOTS of ways in this game to make loads of units. This is one of them.
Whether it's worth the effort though, is up to you. There's nothing in the game to spend billions of units on and you can easily make more money than you'll ever need, simply by playing the game and doing less repetitive and (IMO) more interesting things than salvaging interceptors.
The game gives you a lot of freedom to do whatever you like but there are very few guardrails. You can choose to use a save game editor and give yourself everything in less than a few minutes. Choose wisely.
There are features of the game where you can easily exploit for whatever purpose you want. Unless you are very thoughtful, you can ruin your game in a hurry.
