The original article that explains their problem solved with this is at:
http://www.pcgamer.com/the-most-frustrating-windows-7-audio-problem-solved/
I searched all day and starting looking for sound problems with solid PCs and no hardware issues. One strange thing I noticed while in Sound sources in the Control Panel is that the HDMI source on my TV was blinking in and out with no notification of anything wrong, the time interval it was blinking in and out matched the sound cutting in and out on the game. This same source was also blinking on and off in the Radeon settings: preferences, other settings, default sound device.
Hope this helps some of you out there at least.
Go to Windows updates, choose "optional updates and drivers"
Install ALL of them.
It will work, I promise.
