Friend disappearing visually/'leaving system' constantly

I've never played coop in NMS before, though i managed to convince a friend to get the game yesterday. I tried joining his game both through steam and in game, to be transported to his position. He phases in and out and there's a constant message saying 'playername has left the system'. Even though he is online, in game and building his outpost. As he's building, I see things getting placed every few minutes. We're also still shown as being grouped in the main menu, but in game his icon etc has disappeared completely. Unless we go up into space or a space station.
