game crashes on startup, tried everything
been trying for days to get his to open

i've read every thread on here, online, watched videos, nothing works

clicking start will cause screen to go black, come back for a second, go black again, and then crash with a long bug report token that i've uploaded to zenhelp about 4 days ago with no response.

i've done all the recommended things

brand new install no mods
verify files
uninstall and reinstall
other steam games load fine

asrock b450m/ac with newest bios, updated 2 weeks ago
this allowed me to open up all 12GB of GPU memory
this is what got fortnite to work

AMD 5 3600 no overclocking with latest updates
MSI 3060 OC 12GB no overclocking, latest update installed
16GB memory running XMP with no errors (please don't make go back to 2133)
page file at 1.5x min and 3x max
45GB of free space after install and page file allocation
Windows 10, all updates current
uninstalled MSI afterburner and all overclocking software
uninstalled all overlay software
unchecked steam overlay
uninstalled all the cool things that make building a tweaking computers fun
open as admin
unplug usbs
ctrl+alt when loading
computability mode
install C++
etc,

like i said, i can't remember everything i've tried because i've tried it all. what sucks is i had to go through the same thing to get fortnite to work. it would not load with my stable overclock on my cpu, had to go back to stock. after tweaking for days, fortinte finally loaded, the page file thing got it to work.

then MS flight simulator, same thing, days of more tweaking and research, i don't even remember what got that to work because now i've spent another 4 to 5 days to get NMS to load.

i don't understand why modern games are so fragile and finicky, why can't i overclock anything?. i'm 0 and 3 for getting games to just work.

something to note that may help... i found my original NMS (version 1.0.0.0) and another version 2.3.somthing that both worked. but would not connect and i couldn't update it. contacted zendesk, of course i got no response. i really wanted to play it so i bought NMS on steam and it has never worked. initially i thought it was because i had another install of NMS so i uninstalled all of them and checked to make sure all traces of it were gone. that was the first thing i did and then i did all of the above.

i've pretty much given up and will ask for a refund soon unless someone here has some miracle fix. i've got 11 minutes of game play so far which is just me trying to open it for about 200 times.

Whats the error code if it crashes ?

You may have a look into your windows Event Viewer for more Info about that crash.

WINKey+R opens RUN, here type eventvwr.exe

Here expand Windows Logs and look under Application for warnings with a Timestamp of that crash.

Copy&Paste the details here, so we can check it

If this one shows only AppHang with unknown Reason, check the Events below of this one

windows does not create any warning log around when the game crashes, perhaps because it doesn't even load. i did, however, find a file called Full.log in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\GAMEDATA

this is what is in that file:

Vulkan Loader Message : terminator_CreateDevice: Failed in ICD C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nvmdi.inf_amd64_5218d4313424e84c\.\nvoglv64.dll vkCreateDevice call
Vulkan Loader Message : vkCreateDevice: Failed to create device chain.

that file gets updated every time i try to start the game with exactly the same contents

It could be that the motherboard's integrated graphics is causing the problem, even if you don't use it for anything.

Found this support text from Nvidia, which might help you solve the problem.

https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5182

note:
the previous versions of NMS you tried (v1.0 v2.3) , didn't use Vulkan, so that's probably why they worked.

Previous reply was not me

I will try that work around when I get home and if it doesn't work I'll post the driver number for my GPU but I assure you it is the latest available.
sonichris Jul 5, 2023 @ 5:55pm
tried the work around, no luck, same thing.

the driver version from windows device manager/display adapters is 31.0.15.3640
the driver version in GeForce Experience is 536.40

Could you post the content of your TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.MXML (just open it withe notepad and copy&paste it)
That file is in \steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\Binaries\SETTINGS

And
maybe a crash dumb file has been written.. you find it in :

Your problem is with steam itself. Not the game. It's right there in your post. The link I provided should help you get straightened out. Likely your registry is in need of cleaning/optimization.

i've done all of those things listed except #2, which i will try. i'm not going to set the page file to automatic, nor will i create another admin account, it's just not worth the trouble or probably breaking other games that i fixed by setting the page file to 1.5x to 3.0x RAM. i did run a registry cleaner through CCleaner to try and fix things early on, which obviously didn't, but i'll read up on #2 and try that. thanks for that info.

no errors were found, restarted, and NMS still won't open

further, every other game works, it's just NMS that doesn't so i don't think it's a steam issue i think it's a Vulkan issue since everything keeps pointing back to that. like the tier0_s.dll file error... what is that? i have that file in there. i've even tried redownloading it and moving my original dll out of there, didn't work.
