No Man's Sky - minimum required GPU - GeForce GTX 950M
(I hope this was placed in the correct location :P)

I've been looking forward to the pc release of No Man's Sky for a long time now. I've also known for a while that my gpu does not meet the minimum requirements, but not by a lot, so I thought that I would probably be able to run the game at minimum settings with a low FPS (I'm fine with that).

However, thousands and thousands of negative reviews on Steam yesterday (most of them about performance issues) made me not immediately buy the game, as badly as I wanted to, because I feel like most people having issues are people with less good computers, since most of the positive reviewers that show their pc specifications seem to exceed the minimum requirements by a lot.

So I did some research on my graphics card (GeForce GTX 950M, 4 GB VRAM) and the minimum required graphics card, GeForce GTX 480. I'm not a computer or gpu expert so I probably missed some pretty important things.

http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/ says that my gpu isn't good enough. However, when I look at the more detailed results, I get this:
Pixel Shader version 5.0 (required) 5.1 (what I have)
Vertex Shader version 5.0 (required) 5.1 (what I have)
Dedicated Video RAM 1536 MB (required) 4096 MB (what I have)

When I look at the graphic cards ranking, my gpu does not rank much behind the GTX 480.

Sean Murray also tweeted something about needing OpenGL 4.5, which I also have - while the GTX 480 only has OpenGL 4.2? What I'm also getting from these two pages is that my memory bandwith is about half of the GTX 480, but I don't really know what that implicates.
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gtx-950m/specifications
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-480/specifications

This website gives my gpu a 6,5 out of 10 and the GTX 480 a 7.
http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-950M-vs-GeForce-GTX-480

And this website gives my gpu a 68% performance score when comparing to the minimum requirements.
http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=9193&game=No+Mans+Sky&p_make=Intel&p_deriv=Core+i5-4210H+2.9GHz&gc_make=Nvidia&gc_deriv=GeForce+GTX+950M+v2+4GB&ram=8&checkSubmit=#systemRequirements

I'm not a computer expert, which is why I'm asking for some advice. :P I don't have a lot of games, the heaviest one I have is probably Cities: Skylines, which I can run fine at the highest settings, despite "Can you run it?" claiming that I do not meet the recommended requirements, while Game Debate gives my gpu a 65% performance score for the recommended requirements for Cities: Skylines ( http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=20635&game=Cities%3A+Skylines&p_make=Intel&p_deriv=Core+i5-4210M+2.6GHz&gc_make=Nvidia&gc_deriv=GeForce+GTX+950M+v2+4GB&ram=8&checkSubmit=#systemRequirements ).

Will I be able to play No Man's Sky at minimum settings, with a lower resolution and quite low FPS (20-30), will it run like complete ♥♥♥♥, or is it just a big guess? In any case, I'll at least wait until the next patch and until I can find some user experiences from people with the same gpu.

Hi

I'm using a GTX 950 on my 9 years old computer with Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU and 8 GB Ram. I crashed out right after the Hello Kitty Games logo but can now access the game with the experimental branch. I don't care that much about fps but it runs at 30 fps and my GPU is warm, about 65 degrees Celsius. Have played for 92 mins now but wont play any more until there is a official patch so I know that I can play the game.

Edit: I have only change the FOV setting but besides that it's all original... so to speak.

Your problem is that according to the minimum specs, Core 2 processors are not supported at all, so you are way below minimum spec in the processor department.
Well the problem with my old CPU was that it did not support SSE 4.1 but rather only SSE 3.
They have fixed it in the experimental build so I can play it so I guess we can say that Core 2 CPU's are supported :)

it is not letting me play the game because i have an intel graphics card will this be fixed or should i just say screw this and refund it

They've stated no intel graphics support at this time. Probably not in future either.
I have GTX560Ti and run smoothly 30-50fps on average settings

What are the full specs and OS of your Laptop
Intel Core i5-4210H (2,9GHz) "with Turbo Boost up to 3,5 GHz"
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M (4 GB VRAM)
8 GB RAM
Windows 10 (64 bit)
But these seem to be fine, except the GPU.

The biggest issues with laptops is since they are essentially an "OEM Pre-Build"; dump all the drivers and get the latest ones from the chipset makers. Then ensure your NVIDIA GPU is set as the global default.
My NVIDIA GPU is already set as the global default and I have the latest NVIDIA drivers installed. Or do you mean something else by "dump all the drivers and get the latest ones from the chipset makers"?

@Bernie Sanchez (mic ded): Your pc does seem to exceed the minimum requirements though, as far as I know.

Your GPU is worse than mine, so that sounds great... Your CPU and RAM are better than mine though. At those settings, what's your FPS? Over 20 and not too many other problems?

It's that second number e.g. 5 in 950M versus 8 in 480, and the lack of the "M" which is very important.

The 5 differentiates the main GPU chip used, which in turn deals with clock rates, cuda cores, the amount of shaders, etc.

The "M" connotes a "Mobile" (Laptop) chipset and the minimums do not include an "M" device.
I know my card isn't the best, hence this topic. x)

However that said, you MAY be able to run the game if you go into the Nvidia control panel and under 3D program settings tab, you ADD the NMS.EXE to create a new profile.

Then you must change the settings to use the GPU exclusively with a "single" display.

Also you must change your laptop's power profile to "Maximum performance" and make sure you have it running off a power outlet when you play the game.

Once you start the game put all of your settings to low, test and adjust...
I was planning to do 1 and 4, and 3 is already the case. Thanks for number 2, maybe that'll help once I buy it.

@I haz badonkedonks™: I don't think NMS supports Intel cards. Are you sure you don't have another GPU in your pc?

@Mofasa: I have a GTX 950M, not a GTX 950, so your card is better than mine.

@edirr & Mofasa: My CPU supports all SSE's from SSE2 to SSE42 (except SSE4a), so that means my CPU shouldn't be a problem?

@Mike: Your GPU is better than mine, just below the GTX 480 on this page: http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/rank-my-computer/graphics1/rank/
But the fact that even with that you can play on average settings sounds great.

I feel like it'll probably be a big guess. I'll wait for the next patch, buy and try the game, and refund it if totally unplayable. As @Beezzi said, people with really good machines are having problems while people that barely have the minimum specs can sometimes run the game fine.

over 26 - 30

works very well

If you are having problems please try these:

- clean install of NVIDIA GPU Drivers 365.19 (meaning you DDU out your current/other drivers). Also make sure your NVIDIA GPU gets set to Global Default

- Go into game properties in Steam for NMS and try the Experimental version via the Beta tab.

- If you got in-game ok there is a 30 FPS Cap option you can disable.

Windowed is poorer performance; thats just how this game is, but it is better for launching reason to set the game to launch using Windowed Mode. Once in-game fully past the videos and all; ALT+Enter to go to Full-Screen. Do it again to switch back to Windowed-Mode should you need to ALT+TAB, this helps avoid a game crash due to ALT+TABbing out. The Experimental version helps address this issue too.

A couple other things you can also try is dont use FXAA use SSAA, Turn Vsync off, dont set Max FPS to Max, use 60, 90 ,110 ( I think 60 will be your best option ) The game will use everything your GPU has so you might want to manually crank up the fan, as well as it does get CPU heavy at times, Ive noticed my FX8350 above 80% usage at times loading new areas. As far as the rest of the graphic options you will have to play around with these but dont expect to get them very high and get great fps..

Hi @Jaro
I have a GTX 950M , i7 6700HQ , 8 gb Ram

I'm running NMS in res : 1366 * 600 . I have between 50 and 30 fps in low graphics without Anti Aliasing or else .
I've tested NMS on my tv wich is 1080p , I have between 24 and 35 fps :)

Happy to help you

Just because your TV is in 1080p doesn't mean your game is playing in 1080p
im running a low spec'd card lower then specified and it runs at 1080p with all settings at medium

Heres my system stats

win10 64b
Intel I5 4590 G4 (3.3ghz boosting to 3.7ghz)
8gb random CL11 ram (2x4gb)
1tb standard HDD
AMD Sapphire Readon HD7770-OC 1ghz ( 1150 core - 1250 mem speeds )
Opengl4.5 - SSE4.1
21 inch Acer 1080p monitor
Corsair CX750M PSU

reviewed settings AA filtering OFF - anstropic filtering x2 - generation detail bumped upto high
all the rest are standard settings with a res of 1080p ( 1920 x 1080 )
@Bad-Motha & @NapalmSunrise®[ECWC]: Thanks for the tips, I'll try them if necessary.

@Zaizoun: Not the best resolution, but good that it actually works.

@TamiyaCowboy: It's better than my card though ( http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-HD-7770-vs-GeForce-GTX-950M ), but great it runs fine at medium settings.

As I've already said, I'll wait untill the first patch and then I'll give it a try. :P

Well I tested High settings with Vsync on (My gpu support it ) and FSAA x2 , i had between 22 fps and 32 :)
