white game icon on taskbar
exactly as the title says when I launch the game it's a blank icon, but I can click it fine and everything, just triggering my OCD. Any fix? thanks.

Did you ever fix this? because this sounds like the issue I'm having.

The blank icon in question:

I had the same issue and fixed it by rebuilding the icon cache.

Edit: Apparently this actually doesn't fix it. I had the correct icon showing, but now it's back to the wrong icon again. I am stumped ...

Mine has pretty much always looked like a windows generic white index card. I fixed mine by, welp... not caring. Sorry

It appears that the icon is simply not being updated. It updates as soon as I change taskbar settings to show small icons, then switch back. It also updates when right-clicking on it to pin to the taskbar and then unpin again. It also updates when restarting Windows Explorer. All these are temp solutions, as the next time it will be back to default icon again. I blame Windows 10 ...

I've come up with this fairly simple method of fixing icons that don't show their image.

Open the settings
Select System / Display
Find Scale and layout
Change it to 150%, text and everything will be gigantic, but don't let that deter you, we'll reset it later.
Close and end everything.
Restart the computer
Now windows will update its icon cache. and hopefully everything is fixed now.
Go back to Scale and layout, change back to what you had before.
Restart your computer,

i got one simple solution (if any of the others didn't work/if you're still looking for one) although temporary but if you open up the task manager and search for windows explorer and then just restart it when you have the game running the entire taskbar will reset and the icon will be there

I think I fixed this issue!

So on windows
right click on task bar
Click Taskbar Settings
Click on
Use Small Taskbar Buttons or Toggle your preferred option. Off/on wait a second for the Icon to refresh/update then re-toggle.

This worked for me... will it stay this way ... ehhh NO... sorry.

Felt like trolling a bit ... seriously though the way to actually FIX IT Is:

Navigate to where ever the fk your NMS dir is
SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\Binaries
Find NMS.exe
Right Click,
Send To
Desktop (create Shortcut)
Use said shortcut to launch the game

No joke this actually works

enjoy.

Dont ask me why this works blame HG for being bad at programming?
if I had to guess HG didn't register their Icon with Steam properly

I did this and also grabbed the Steam Shortcut and it fixed the icon on taskbar when launching the steam id shortcut, seems to just be a cache error if either shortcuts don't co-exist or can identify the location for the logo for taskbar version, so I definitely recommend this solution and if you want to have both sitting its an option just have the other sit somewhere aside or choose NMS.exe as the primary launch shortcut instead of having TWO shortcuts.

Will edit if deleting the NMS.exe shortcut, relaunch the steam id shortcut and see if it registers the taskbar logo properly or not.

Edit: deleting the NMS.exe shortcut DOES NOT fix the steam id shortcut, so stick with the NMS.exe if you want the Taskbar of No Man's Sky to not be a blank windows index icon.
