Suddenly, my performance is sh!t.
So, I noticed that there were some new patches out and updated No Man's Sky. I start it up and everything's running smoothly, I start to explore the new features introduced by Foundation. After a while, I paused the game to walk my dog, came back 20 minutes or so later and was lagging a bit. Nothing too weird about that, I saved and restarted the game.

After it was open again, I faced a loading screen for 15-20 minutes. Once it was over I was getting massive amounts of audio and video stutter, FPS drops to as low as 4 FPS, almost anytime I, or anything in my FOV moves. So, I restarted my computer. Same 15-20 min loading and everything. I went into my NVIDIA settings, set them to default, then dropped them all to low quality & high performance. Same thing with the in-game settings. Turned off anti-aliasing, and after some googling, disabled vsync and gsync. Still nothing. I even tried dropping my resolution to the lowest possible without f-ing up my aspect ratio, barely helped at all.

My graphics drivers are up to date, I just checked again while typing this.
PC specs are:
GPU: NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 950M
CPU: Intel Core i7 - 6500U
RAM: 8GB
OS: Windows 10
With a 256GB SSD.

I just tested another graphically intensive game to use as a control, and to my horror, I'm having similar issues. Since it's not nearly as bad as with NMS, it happened in NMS first, and I already wrote all this, I'll post anyway. Also, I'm not sure where else to go. Please help me.

- HDD Full? (No Caching. Cause 8ggb ram is MINIMUM für nms [even tho it workes with 6 for me))
- Tower dusty? Dust lowers the efficiency of your fans, causing the hardware to throttle down. Maybe a fan is defect or so.

Sounds as if you might have something running in the background that wasn't running before. Or something running that didn't cause a problem before until a current update.

Shouldn't have walked your dog. He sent his buddies over or paid off the neighbors cat to mess your PC up so you'll spend more time with him. Cats sit on keyboards. My roomates parakeet would peck at my keyboard if I stepped away. They get jealous.
Launch the game, wait till you get in to the settings screen so you can adjust your graphical settings,
Change some thing when you get the message that it will be active after you relaunch NMS.
Don't restart but change back the changed setting to what it was.
Save the game.
Relaunch and normally NMS is back to normal.

Success
I'm on a laptop, it isn't dusty. Memory caching is disabled.
@darkflemish I tried what you said, did nothing.
I installed a couple mods that are supposed to increase performance, but didn't notice anything other than worse graphics.

I'm pretty sure No Man's Sky is trying to run on my Intel Integrated GPU instead of my Nvidia card. I ran MSI Afterburner while the game was open, and my Nvidia card had no usage, while my Intel GPU was under a massive load. I have the game set to run on my Nvidia GPU in my Nvidia settings, so I don't know why this is happening.

In my NMS GAMEDATA folder, there's a file called FullLog.txt it reads as follows:
[SYS] [Init] NVAPI Init OK
[SYS] [Init] GetAssociatedNvidiaDisplayHandle failed: -6
[NET] {Azure} : Auth server environment : [prod]
[NET] {Azure} : Auth server url : [pc-nms-auth.nomanssky.com]

Could the second line be the log of my problem? How can I fix this?
THere are methods to either temporarily disable or permanetly disable the Integrated Graphics inside your CPU... one requires knowledge on how to access and change settings of your MB Bios, whilw another method uses your Windows Device Manager UI ... you will need to Search for answers on how to do this.

Another possibility is in his thread and might apply to your PC...

Even though i have an old PC that you would think shouldnt even run Windows 10 let alone a game intended for CPU's with more than 2 cores, i can tell you when FTH flagged NMS and set it in the registry, the FPS to even get through the start screen/galaxy was at 2 to 5 FPS and in game was at max 10.

Good Luck

its the performance of the game. hope on new patchs before christmas, too....

...but unbelievable. bought the game now since 4 month and since release gave´s ever probs and ever with amd, nividea..any with intel core and other have probs with the os´s. i like the game..but the support is really garbage. dreamed of ever new features...and they delievered only unplayable palttform with ever new probs every week?

pff...60 üros(more as 60$ without taxes as export per Game) and for what? Now can you only look and wait everytime on new solutions or new probs. And this is now the Game?

That´s really no go and correctly buisness must reduce the costs or part of your total spend must back in your bag as refund. German Untertaking lives not long with so stupid issues.

i believe nobody is interesting to buy a car and after the honorable prices can you run after solutions to solved every week new mistakes or damages. Or better..you sell new cars and only a little group can drive by car on the highway and the other group hasn´t a permission because the parts are all garbage :)

But by the way....now we can wait maybe next 4 month again and somewhere in the future is this a playable game? Maybe in 4 Month...or it gives new feature and till to pension ever new issues.

Nice look for a Game :D

@gattlinngsbolts
Fallout 4 is still laggy in the heart of boston - heavier than nms and its over a year old. Skyrim is still buggy (and there still that addon of oblivion that kills your savegame after 150 hours). CSGO is full of unfixed bugs since release, causing connection errors, pending lobbys, texture bugs and it'ss poorly prepared against cheating, even tho its pure multiplayer. But it's on top.
Arma players have a saying with a nostalgic tune: "What would Arma be without bugs?" It happened to a player on my server, that he got shot by his own weapon.
GTA Online is 40% playtime and 60% loading screens. Doesnt matter if installed on ssd with alot of ram, or not.
Windows is still vulnarable, when online, even tho they had like 20 years to fix that.
Niantic needed like 2 weeks for a patch including just 3 small things: against permanent vibration without reason, text-fixes.
You can buy antivirus software for android at the official appstore, even tho it's proven that they are a (the) real security problem. Same with "performance tweaking" software, thats usualy the most performance-intensive app on the phone.
I just wanna say that one must be realistic. I am also having these problems but the game is still very playable to me. Even if not i'd have said to me "♥♥♥♥ happens". It can be much much worse. Ever heard of starforge? Its quite the same like no mans sky but without lifting of. Yeah.. they promised it but quite fast decided to say "oh didnt u know? thats the release version". Imagine no man's sky with worse performance, without going into space and 3 types of monsters at night.

And even tho the performance sank a bit since foundation I'm quite happy with it. I was sometimes even impressed that the questlines are well written (but short). I mean.. there are some fresh ideas and it focused something very important for nms: the gameplay
(Especially storages at the home planet open new paths in dealing with the economy).

That "bug happens", especially at Pcs is no wonder: There are infinite possibilitys of a pc setup.. not only talking of hardware, but also of software (especially drivers) that might interact. I don't espect, that a 3 Man-Team has enough pc's to check all the possibilitys out. Even a QA-Team with maybe 100 pc's can't. So it's something like impossible to eleminate all bugs before the release.
And sometimes they are so tricky, that the reasons are hard to find, or worse case: too vital for the remaining program

@ correct...and all games together?

All Games in the last years are ever only experimental studios? I´m not interesting to look every week that a Game ever and ever needs updates, patchworks, new stats with new cost´s and the worst of all...you can´t really play the game. I want to play the Game...not more :)

...i´ve only GTx550Ti 1GBRam included Oc´setting. The Card ran the Game tough and rough with 15000mb/s throughput in my Proc AMDX6 T1055 and since 5 years till today as master of desaster inboxed. Composition is playable almost Games and handled NMS sure in High Quality with maybe 30-50FPs (ok..isn´t a new 4GBRam Card of 900ér series and more).

But it was nice playable...and till to the ship fps drop/bug/scriptfailure today cool, too.

Often also really nice to see, if so much people with really hot titans, 1000´series and newer becomes so stupid issues so how maybe 60$ "LowGraphic-Cards" in the Shop. And what is ever almost the prob? Clear..ever mistakes in scripts, failure in ini.dat of your driver´s or other incompatible stuffs of software wherever you are.

Thats make the Branche not really rough the last years.

In the past was all so easy..you bought a CD, installed a game..and all was happy.

Today...nothing goes without streaming, everyday new angry about only experimental features and the best of all...nobody ask you...after your interesting about new updates. You must take whatever the Provider sells on this streamingplatform. The Sin behind of this Troublemaking is for me more patent. Yesterday gave´s games for all...and tomorrow sells we new Hardware for you because...upps...now is your favorite game unplayable with your old card?

i believe..many more knows what i mean.

This can´t you await of a game...if you installed only from cd´s. thats was ever original and still alive as best performance ever i mean. If the Game ran after Install...came never surprises after months or even years. it is...

....by any Publisher how codemaster/bohemia in chechz since OF over 20 years knows everybody where the games has probs and lags. Little bit inform about these Story of the Studio, then can´t you await that these series works. That was ever a Open World Chaos and important to say is...they worked on this title more as 20 years. OF Release believe 1999.

But cool, somehow...if you know the OFDR Title (there only from Codemasters) came 2008 as last best Title of the Series only on CD/DVd on Market, too. And all was happy...

There given´t Monolith with look how Playstations, Symbols of other Stuffs how Pokemon, Ark Survival Triangel and it is not a Non- Multiplayer Platform with functionwise only about the Internet. Really to laugh...thats all hang around on a big space Marketingportal and brings fresh ideas direct on the table of Mr. Hello Nice Guy in Wise of Names, Takes for the Systems and Planets. Why must a Non-Multiplayertitel in the Internet?

I mean...with NMS gives never a ordently Game. All other is in...

...but by Hello sure not the Game.

This actually worked for me - even without a restart. I just changed the graphics quality preset, clicked apply and switched back to my usual preset - framerate problems fixed.
Game has become unplayable for older cards. Single digit frames per second are now common. Prior to the big update I had smooth play everywhere, now it is unplayable at lowest settings. I have old 960 and am going to update but it seems even people with fast GPUs are having issues. Please optimize the game.
Game runs like garbage, and I have a 6700K and 1080Ti. Though I am using Linux.

I'm using an i7-6700k OC'd and a GTX 980 running it at 100fps. Maybe you should try adjusting your settings?
