Cant start "They Who Returned quest
Hi
Havnt played NMS for ages. Been hearing about the new Worlds 1 and 2 updates and thought id give it a go, again.

I wanted to start exploring the new purple worlds, but found out i have to complete certain goals to do this (why??) anyway, one of those is to complete the quest "They Who Return"
For some reason i cant activate this. I found a dissonant system but no quest start.

My main quest line is now on "Atlas eternal, Crimson web".
Just finished gathering all the seeds. Now just a series of repeat quests to share my discoveries with the Atlas.

Not sure if i did the Purge or not, like i say was ages ago since i last played.

Anyway, totally confused as to why "they who returned" hast started. Please help ;(

They Who Returned has its own set of pre-requisites.
Complete Artemis path to the end of The Purge.
Find a Harmonic Camp on a dissonant planet and unlock it (and unlock the jetpack customisation).
Make a warp and your mission should trigger. I just did this in on an older save file the last 48 hours on a save, it still works as designed.

  • Locate dissonant planet in dissonant system
  • Look for lower-case lambda (λ) in visor (on foot) or compass (in flight)
  • Make close inspection of Dissonance Resonator on foot
  • If you see "Inverted Mirror" seek out another Resonator
  • If you see "Echo Locator" shoot the Resonator to acquire it
  • Run away / Hide / Employ cloaking device (optional)
  • Use the Echo Locator*
  • Go to Harmonic Camp
  • Lift the lockdown.

Check your Log. If New Beginnings is present then you have completed The Purge.

Warp once.

*If no camp is located, try again in a different dissonant system.

I just did it and can verify that you need (2) things done in order for the quest to trigger.

1- Finish up to and through the Atlas Purged main story quest

2- Find any dissonance detected world AND find a harmonic camp. After you do this harmonic camp, return to space and make a warp jump.

Soon as you arrive at other end of warp jump, They Who Returned quest will trigger with a message sent to you.

I love how 'here's a simple question' gets answered with walls of likely overwhelming text without asking a single question about the problem.

Why is my shoe wet?
  • <dissertation on the surface tension of water>
  • <history of shoes>
  • <article on waterproofing techniques
  • Why would you want a wet shoe, when dry are better?

What are you on about? Or are you literally on something?

All three replies to OP above, including mine, specifically and correctly answered OP. Each response barely had more then few sentences or bullet points. And that info is precisely needed due to the restrictions of that particular quest.

Your own reply is a 'wall of text' since it fits your bizarre definition of such.
Blimey all that lot to explore a purple planet...reallyl!? ;)
On the Atlas path ive done all the seeds missions. Not sure how i get to the "Purge"?
Atlas etenal, Crimson web is my stage at the Atlas path atm. They just seem to be repetitive quests...;(

The Purge is the final quest in the Artemis questline.

Atlas Eternal is a forever repeating quest, but it does indicate that you have finished the Atlas path.

What are the other quests "above the line" in your quest log? There should be 2 others besides Atlas Eternal.

There should be three Primary Missions in your Log.
The Space Anomoly (Beyond the System)
And
Ghosts in the machine. (Apollo the Adventurer)

You're a third of the way there.

Next up: Expanding the Base, Scientific Research & A Leap in the Dark.

Ghosts in the Machine will be put on-hold until you have made sufficient progress in Expanding the Base and Scientific Research. You are not required to complete either.
Ive already done expanding the base, and scientific reasearch?
Do you mean i just need to continue the Ghosts in the machine quests??

Titan 17 Expedition, your ship has the drive installed.
Just complete it and you can bring the drive back with you.
It took me 2 days to do Titan 17... and I had no clue what I was doing.

As I understand it there are only two ways to reveal purple stars in-game, neither of which involve using the terminal in the Space Anomaly to clone a simple piece of equipment.

Plan A:
Main Menu Play > Load Game Awakenings | The Atlas Path----------Alone Amidst the Stars----------The Space Anomaly | | | Ghosts in the Machine | | | +-------Expanding the Base------+ | | | | v | | | | +-----------------------Scientific Research---> | | | A Leap in the Dark | | | The First Traveller | | | Patterns in Time | | | 16 / 16 | | | The Purge | | | New Beginnings----------+ | | Atlas Eternal-------------------+-------They Who Returned* | In Stellar Multitudes

Plan B:
Main Menu Play > New Game > Expedition 17: Titan Expedition 17: Titan | The Atlas Path----------Alone Amidst the Stars----------The Space Anomaly | | | Ghosts in the Machine | | | +-------Expanding the Base------+ | | | | v | | | | +-----------------------Scientific Research---> | | | A Leap in the Dark | | | The First Traveller | | | Patterns in Time | | | 16 / 16 | | | The Purge | | | New Beginnings----------+ | | Atlas Eternal They Who Returned*
