How do you find water worlds?
I have been going to systems that say "water" on the info bar but when I go into them for the current expedition i get met with "no water planets in this system".

is this a major bug or is there a trick to finding them?

Are you going to purple systems using the Atlantid drive?

Water systems predate Worlds 2 update; they are systems that contain planets with decent water coverage, but they don't include the new ocean biomes, you have to go to purple systems to find those

I see, the expedition just said systems that have "water" in them. it said nothing about purple systems

I found a water planet in a purple system but the only thing it said for the info was "Disonant".

so the game is bugged and won't correctly show where water planets are

It's possible that that's a bug, and it's also possible that it's working as intended...
The tip doesn't say they ocean systems will be marked as "water" in the galaxy map.

Ultimately, it's not anywhere near being the most pressing bug to resolve atm...

I understand that this would be low on the list but if a game says to look for systems with "water" then I as a player will go to systems that have "water" on the detail tab. I did that but was unable to find any "water" planets despite the game pointing me in that direction.

Why are you looking for a random water world system? Everything you need for the expedition milestones is located in the 6 systems (start + 5 rendezvous) you are made to visit along the path. Rendezvous #2 is on a deep ocean water world.

Purple star systems.

On Galaxy map find Y systems, most likely you find water worlds there.

Exactly this. I did Titan yesterday, took my time, messed about a bit, but still under 12hrs to fully complete. Everything was in the areas discovered by Hello Games.
Bar one bug, it was a breeze with points working and directing me exactly where I needed to go, even when I wandered off of point.

Given you may have strayed a long way from the Expedition path on your wild goose chase, here's how to get back:

The water planet that will satisfy most of the aquatic milestones is in the Haporin system (uncharted Rendezvous #2 so it had no Space Station).

Since it has no Space Station, you cannot simply teleport to it.
If you put a base computer down on any of the planets there, just teleport to that base.

If you didn't put down a base computer, you'll need to teleport back to Rendezvous #1 system Eistori and warp back from there. Visit any space station or summon the Anomaly and use the teleporter. Eistori system will be marked with Rendezvous 1 notation.
Once you have teleported to Eistori, open your Discoveries list. Haporin should hopefully be right next to your current selected system.
Set a waypoint to it by using MMB/RightStickPress on its name on the left side list. Now get in your starship and launch and open the Galactic Map, select Custom Waypoint and it should show you the path directly back to Haporin system.

If by some chance you haven't even been there yet and it's not on your Discoveries list, teleport back to Rendezvous 1 space station and select the milestone that sends you there (Phase 2, milestone 7 IIRC) and follow the Expedition path in the Galaxy map.
