For in game, it would also be nice to be able to filter just places I have visited instead of all the extra data it picks up from other players nearby or seemingly random data.
One other note:
At some point if you keep exploring, old data will fall off the discoveries tab, so definitely place a base any place you want to remember/go back to. Also its a good idea to screenshot the coordinates from photo mode, and in ship/visor coordinates if you want a spot marked on a planet. (if you ever feel like going back someplace) Years ago, I had to accept that there is generally no going back, though its a lot more possible now than before.
Yeah I'm surprised there is not a website that can search the galaxy and view discoveries by any user. I'd also like to know exactly how many systems have been explored.
