Ship rewards. I know, I know but
Is it really a reward if you have to buy it? Shouldn't you just get it? I could see maybe once, still not a reward but once, OK. But you have to spend 1400 nanites on every save for every ship. That can run 12-15 thousand nanites per save. I guess maybe it's to keep players from starting another save with a nice ship or new players from skipping the initial experience but if you've done an entire expedition, I'd say your not a new player yet. And if I'm at endgame I've got enough nanites that it's not too big of a deal but still.
I mean it's kinda like " YOU'VE WON A NEW CAR!".....for 80 thousand dollars LOL
My suggestion would be instead of nanites make it units. It would be a nice little end game money sink, maybe.

What are you talking about? All my expedition rewards are free. And, the other items cost quicksilver, not nanites.

Correction: unless you are talking about what might be required to claim it at the end of the expedition (I haven't finished it yet). In that case, the nanites rewards you receive for earlier tasks and/or the requirement to obtain x thousand nanites (depending on the expedition) is more than enough, so I still don't see the issue.

The wraith, as I recall, cost me 1400 nanites. Kind of dumb, but they do give you more along the way. For a ship I'm not going to use later (well, ever)? I picked it up and then left the expedition. lol

They give you way more nanites than you'd ever need to cover the purchase of it, and the new titan staff both. You don't like it to 'cost', others don't like it being 'free'. Regardless of which game mechanics you prefer - it's free so far as rewards go, because you were given plenty of nanites as rewards to cover them. So... pick your definition I guess right?
are...are you talking about importing the staff and ship through the post-expeditions menu, and not the one from the qs merchant's 'claim expedition rewards????

fairly easy to come by 1400 nanites. land on an infested world and grab some eggs

TBH I don't usually use that importer cuz I got more than I could ever need. All I know is I had to pay 1400 nanites for the ship in the expedition save and when I went back to my thousand hour save I had to buy it again. Are you telling me on any save I can just got to that importer and get those ships for free?

Whispering eggs? They sell for nanites now? Wow, when did they do that? At this point I mostly just fly around and build bases or look for weird planets. I haven't picked up a whispering egg in forever except for expeditions that required it. I don't remember them selling for nanites tho.

you can refine them for nanites

Not sold, refined. Each larval core can be refined into 50 nanites. So you can expect ≈1000 from one infested site.

You get 1080 nanites as a reward three times. Sounds like someone is a bit greedy.
I do all the expeditions on one save. Current standing is over 200,000 nanites. We get paid off so well at the end of an expedition is silly to worry about paying a few nanites for the cross save ships and tools.

Strategically, it does make it harder to obtain them at the beginning of an expedition.
forget the eggs just go farm the radiant shards, a 10 stack of shards is like 500 nanites and you don't have to fight anything to get them
tsk tsk, I still think the OG slurping up a whole inventory and refining it of runaway mold will come out on top when its all said and done... :P

You DO have to pay tax on cars you win, and it's a lot closer to the actual value of the car than 1400 nanites is to a good ship. 1400 nanites is almost nothing, nobody that has tons of expeditions complete and makes lots of new accounts won't know how to get them extremely fast. I get 1400 nanites in about 15 seconds of gameplay by shooting some runaway mould, shoving the drops in my personal refiner, and then just grabbing the nanites that come out when it's done.

I always figured they added the nanite cost so you couldn't easily call in another, prior expedition's ship to the current expedition..... because it would be superior to your starting ship.... a penalty :-)

Probably wrong...
