Wraith, How does it rank?
So, I have just unlocked the Wraith and it's awesome. But I'm not experienced enough in the game to understand how good actually is.

Anybody care to compare it to a Sentinel Ship loaded with Infra Knife?

Bad. It has small amount of slots, getting more for living ships is complicated, and its weapons are just photon cannons.

Sentinel ship is easily upgradable, has great damage output with either infra-knife or its basic sentinel cannon and can hover.

Just do missions with your fleet. They will bring back upgrades for your Living Ship.

Not all ships are a min/max endeavour. Enjoy the ship. It can handle anything the game throws at it (you have to move around some slimy organic tech to get better results - I'd wear some gloves, cause... ew...).
Whenever it comes to living ships, I just think about all the complications with the tech, the fact that you can't just get X class upgrades for them etc. and it just puts me right off them.

Yeah, I suppose you can just enjoy them if you don't care about having the best ship you can have.

Generally, if you like it, that's good enough.

I don't much like living ships, myself - I tend to go back to a trusty explorer in the end.

Just know that upgrading a living ship is a pain in the rear. At least, it used to be - the percentage chance to get the upgrades was incredibly low.

Yes but the slot upgrades are pretty rare and very random. Sending out five missions a day I've gone as long as two weeks with no living ship slot expansion. Nominal return rate is two or four a week.

It doesn't really matter. The game is not 'difficult'.

Fly what you think looks good, in an infinite game... don't settle for 'looks good enough'.
As far as living ships go, it's at the higher end.

Tip at the end of the expedition you are better off transferring the ship you got in the expedition rather than redeem a new one. The one on the expedition has many upgrades, the redeemed on at the QS merchant is bare.
I like the new expedition ship. looks awesome and just with what was installed on it to start it rips pirates apart. We will have a grand ole time together, exploring all the new stuff added to the game. I feel like I have a new partner to go on my journey with me.

plus you can just move parts from the old living ship to this new one.

Great tip. I did that, and then because I'm a greedy bastard, I redeemed a new one hoping to end up with 2. The upgraded one got removed and now I have one that is bare.

Serves me well for being so greedy.

And that's not saying much.

It has always perplexed me why living ships are so very mediocre at best, when the first standard one you get requires so much work, like a HUGE amount of work.... only to get a big fat MEH.

I got my wraith, and immediately sent it to the ship archive.... i'm sure i will set it up at some point, but i'm in no rush because i know its just going to be disappointing.
I think it depends on how you think it looks and all the extra upkeep needed to improve it.

So far, it is the best looking living ship I have seen...but still not impressed by it enough to want to fly it. They just look too odd for my tastes. Add in that you need to do special activities to upgrade the darn things and I lose all interest.

All you had to do was send the first one to the ship archive in your main save and you can copy it again, and again.... i copied it 3 times to make sure i got plenty of tech to move around.
