Nutrient processor slots have half the capacity of slots in the exosuit & starship cargo, and one quarter of freighter & storage container slots. I suppose that's intentional for gameplay purposes because there is no obvious program efficiency reason for it (100 extra bits is not going to kill the game), nor are there nearly enough slots even for all the raw ingredients, so if you are experimenting with recipes you keep having to shuffle across from storage, making the grind even grindier.
