Expedition 17 can't find underwater wreck even with sub and scanner
Does anyone have any tips?

Make sure you are in a system with NPC's not the abandoned system. I cannot remember if it was system 3 or 4, but someone had a save beacon marked on one of the planets.
If the Nautilon radar doesn't pick one up, then go to another planet...
the deep ocean planets apparently don't have any (or at least the one you encounter as part of the expo path doesn't)

This might be the problem with the expo planet others have noted isn't giving results...

On one of the planets I think it was at an RP, or on one jump towards the RP, there's a base that is specifically named something like "EP 17 Underwater Freighter Crash" and, yes, it's legit, the guy built a base above an underwater freighter. Simply land, and swim down to the distress beacon. It's on a planet called "I hate oceans".

Might as well loot the thing while you're at it if you're not in MP for some reason.

If you're already past that, pull up your discoveries list and find that planet name, and go to that station.

If you go to Oddock VI, and head to the planet Yuza 99/A7, I placed a Communications Station and a Save Beacon at a freighter wreck. Enjoy!

I spent an hour looking on the water world near R2 not finding anything thinking I was going crazy or doing something wrong... thank you for this!

I actually got the Nautilon QUEST during the expedition, and since I know freighters spawn as part of that quest, I did it up to where I found one.

(This doesn't work as well on saves that start on the Expedition. IIRC, The Nautilon quest requires Journey Level 50 to start.)

Somehow, I managed to trigger the Rendezvous 2 quest milestone, but due to the great depth and darkness of the sea floor, I could not see what it was that triggered it before ascending. Moreover, I didn't have the pressure upgrade for my exosuit, so I wasn't about to go swimming around at that depth. I'm guessing it's the aforementioned crashed freighter earlier in the thread.
The problem now, however, is I have no marker for where R2 is, so how can I Chronicle it with a photo?

Check this post by @smurfy - the coordinates for all rendezvous points

This one caught me a bit. Don't try the deep water planet, go to one with shallow water that's near. Chances are that someone left a marker.

I barely dived 10 feet before the Rendezvous completed, just looked down and took photo at the same time, easy, got both rewards which include the deep water pressure thing, went back up spwned the Nautilon and dove to bottom to get the 1001 depth thing, got the Sea Glass while down there, went back up all done, off to a normal system with large water area to find Freighter easy.
If you did not take the photo when you triggered the first part that was a bit stupid. You will have big trouble finding the spot now.
the not pinging the location of a sunken freighter was a bug and subsequently fixed in experimental, but perhaps not out on the regular build yet
