Getting killed by a tornado while looking for ferrite on a planet that only has salt is not fun.
Seriously, though.
I can't jetpack out of it.
I can't do anything about it.
I just get slammed into the ground until I'm killed? And that's "gameplay"?

I'm really asking for some guidance here, because

1. They're half invisible.
2. They're unavoidable.
3. YOU started me with no shields, no tech, on this expedition where I have to fix a ship YOU broke for NO reason.

Why, then, am I ~literally punished~ for bothering to play the game?

Real question, because if your idea of "fun" is "let's render the player ill-equipped and then kill them in ways they can't respond to", maybe you should stop developing games and go try playing them for a bit.

I just did the start of the expo, it took all of a couple mins to get the ship repaired...
There are barnacle-looking rocks that give ferrite dust.

Also, the first thing you should do is rearrange your tech to take advantage of SC slots (and adjacency bonuses)...
I moved my jetpack to one, and the hazard protection module to the other.

You can see tornadoes coming if you keep an eye to the way stuff flies around on the ground... It's subtle with the stormy atmosphere of a gas giant, but it's still possible to see them if you pay close enough attention.

That would be lovely! Except EVERYTHING is "SALT". That's it. I found one rock before I got stuck in an invisible hazard AND COULDN'T EVEN GET TO IT. Then I was murdered because I was issued tech with trash shields, and no mobility.

I'm glad you had success, but I'm not trying to watch you play, I'm trying to play a game that doesn't disadvantage me, waste my time, then kill me.

It gives you everything you need to succeed.
Also, there is no real penalty for death in NMS (unless you're playing PD). Just go back to your grave and get all your stuff back.
And again, tornadoes are not invisible, you just have to look closer at the way the debris is moving around...
And not all rocks on the starter planet give salt... most do, but I found one that gives ferrite dust, and it's around everywhere...

Again. Good. For. You.

I, however, could NOT see the tornado that I could NOT escape, and WAS killed, wasting the time I'd already spent looking for what WAS NOT AVAILABLE. If it was, I wouldn't be sitting here saying this, because clearly I'm not interested in wasting my time. Either you ARE interested in wasting my time with your replies touting your success that I did not experience, or your reading comprehension skills are lacking. Pick one, but in both cases add to the discourse with substance please.

Should probably tell them they need to go UNDERGROUND to the caves to find the ferrite rocks instead of just saying they exist.

I didn't find a cave at all myself. the ferrite rocks I found were on the surface...

I get what OP was saying. I kinda cheated a bit though: I found a couple broken machineries on the way that happened to have rusted metal and saved them.

Didn't think about looking for caves though.

that's not cheating, that's just being resourceful.
But you still needed ferrite dust to make the metal plate to build the portable refiner no?

No, you get the Personal Refiner pre-packaged just for reaching your ship. There are also scattered small Condensed Carbon crystals to fuel it.

However, it is worth remembering that the Worlds Part II variable biome planet generation can make it possible to spawn in an area where something like Ferrite Dust is much scarcer than it is in other regions of the same planet. Just because you or I found it easily, doesn't mean everyone else will on New Aftesfi.

I survived being caught by tornadoes twice. You have to wait them out and use the jetpack JUST before you hit the ground.

You start with the terrain manipulator so tunnel everywhere.

Also, hiding under your ship when you find it provides a lot of protection from wind.

Ah, silly me... I didn't claim the reward :steamfacepalm:

Been trap inside tornado couple of time. As long as you save your Jet Pack, should not be problem to survive but it took a while to escape from it.
Remember to use jet pack when you almost reach ground, there high chance that you will be throw back to the air.
I usually escape after being toss up and down around 5-6 times.
Since I choose survival, all my exosuit inventory will be gone and many tech will be damage, so I always choose to try to survive the tornado.
Does anyone know how to get a "cry-baby" emo for the forum comments? Badly need one ...

The tornadoes are pretty huge, but if one does sneak up on you it gives you plenty of warning bumps before picking you up and throwing you about. As soon as you start getting "bumped" just dig to safety or move out of the way.

Terrain manipulator is your friend, when it flings you at the ground just dig a hole in the direction you're travelling and you'll exit the tornado. Or if you have enough jetpack fuel exit via the top or sides and move away from it.

Haha, nice planet - I dug long tunnels under the surface (so as not to waste the resource of the life support system) to collect 7 crystals and get an advanced laser to start mining purified ferrite in caves.
Read the rewards and plan ahead to ensure everything goes smoothly.
