Steam deck showing yellow caution sign exclamation mark for controller butttons.
Like title says. Not finding any fixes. Game used to show buttons fine but now doesn't making the game extremely difficult. Any solution is helpful..

Beta and stable didn't work as well as reinstalling.

Reset the controller bindings to default.

Yellow ! means the button (or key) is assigned to multiple items and therefore will not function until you fix it.

what Geldric said...

here's my "how to" on this topic for NMS... it is written with xbox controller buttons but the UI will tell you the proper buttons for the control device you are using while doing this procedure...
Originally posted by wkitty42:
  1. load into the game
  2. open Options on the first screen OR go to the Options tab in-game
  3. select Controls
  4. at the top select Remap Controls
  5. bottom left Configure Gamepad via Steam - this loads the steam controller tool.
if you get a black box here, click the Maximize button and then you can hit the Restore button to return to a window.
  6. at the top, where it says Current Layout, click the selector below (just above the View Layout and Edit Layout options)
  7. select the Recommended tab at the top
  8. select the proper Official Configuration for No Man's Sky that matches your controller
  9. hit the A face button to select that config
  10. hit the X face button to apply that config
  11. hit the B face button for done and to back out - this returns you to the game
  12. now your controller should be using the latest layout template and everything should be operational again.

I've done this and still not working.

Ugh... sorry :( that was the extent of my controller knowledge

However, is it possible that the Steam controller config is overriding the NMS one? Apologies if this is super basic and you would have already checked.

Hope you get it resolved :nmsatlas:

Np I appreciate the help. All the buttons on the controller work fine. It seems like a glitch and not even extensive googleing fixing due to it being a rare issue and other experiencing it don't have solutions they all just left the game as far as last replies.

I have the same issue, pretty sure it started after a steam deck update last night...
I know the button layout anyway, so its mostly just been a visual annoyance, but I just noticed the exocraft boost wont work now, which is a pain. Hope we see a fix soon

Same problem here on the Steamdeck. Worked fine yesterday but yellow exclamation marks on all the control labels today. There was an update earlier today which may be the cause. Resetting controller / key bindings didn't help.

Yeah, that seems the most likely cause.
I was playing immediately before and after the update, and the issue started then. Had accidently let the battery die while playing (forgot the switch was off at the socket... -_-), I updated the deck when I turned it on again, and then buttons were bugged... I initially thought a file was corrupted due the battery failure, but given other Steam Deck users are having the same issue it seems pretty clear the update caused the bug. Fingers crossed that means we'll see a fix pretty soon

Well, it's nice to know I'm not the only one this is happening to. I'm reinstalling the game as I type but judging by the other comments it's probably not going to make a difference.

I forgot to mention I tried that, but it didn't help :(

Same problem, brand new steam deck OLED unboxed and installed only one game, NMS. Bought the steam deck in the hopes to play No Man’s Sky and with the green check mark, thought I was in for a pleasant experience. Sounds like a software update issue, that I hope is fixed soon.

PSA NEW UPDATE FIXED ISSUE! 🤗
Torsional Metric Jan 12, 2024 @ 9:54pm
Also having this issue. There’s something very strange going on. Sometimes changing the layout of the controls in game to something obviously nonfunctional (as a way of pushing out old settings) doesn’t actually succeed, and sometimes it does succeed.

The icon for the R2 button seems to work??

I tried switching to beta channel and back to see if that would resolve, as well as one other compatibility tool version.

No dice.

Not excited about uninstall/reinstall, especially since many have said it doesn’t help in this and other threads.

The new steam deck update has fixed the issue for me too.
It required a restart to take effect, so make sure you've done that if you're still facing issues now
