Same problem for me on Linux too, Fedora 38, AMD Radeon RX 590. It's definitely the shared cache, it's not the game content that's updating.

Adding to the responses: Linux (Manjaro) on Kernel 6.6, all AMD System, experiencing the same problem of a 5GB download every day.

I also noticed it a few days ago and now thought to take a look at open discussions about it.

Usually with updates there appears to be an "i" symbol in the download-window next to the game title and mousing over it it says what is being downloaded/verified, as in "shader" or "patch data" or "verifying".

In case of No Man's Sky it doesn't specify what is being download (at least on my end).

I am pretty sure disabling the setting for shader pre-loading would help but also as mentioned above this will disable the downloads for any other installed titles and only No Man's Sky starts a large download daily.

Same problem on Gentoo, with a Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060, nvidia-drivers-535.146.02.

It's been downloading 4.8gb on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (I haven't launched Steam before that this week). It mentions downloading shaders, and it's definitely some downloading, not some validating (switching from wlan to eth considerably speeds it up, displaying the download speed expected for both).

Devs, let us know what more debugging info we can provide, if any.

Also happening here for me with Fedora 39, 5GB everyday for the past few days. Will uninstall and reinstall with pre-cache turned off and see if that fixes it

Hello, just to say that I also have this problem, solved by unchecking the shader cache. Config: Linux Mint 21.2, kernel 5.15.0-91, Nvidia rtx3060, 535 driver. AMD Ryzen 5600

Same problem here on Linux. Only with NMS. I wonder whether other games on my PC don't use it or whether the issue actually is NMS-related...

Still going on on Wednesday, so it doesn't seem to be a temporary problem. I really hope the download server is not on S3 or something, because the bandwidth bill is going to be salty. :)

EDIT: also, this post should be in the Bug section of the forum, if it still can be changed.

Same problem here, Manjaro Gnome on an AMD system with AMD Ryzen 7 2700 and R9 380. Will try switching off the shader precache!

I respect linux userbase, people would usually say "get a better pc" "reinstall Windows" at every problem but linux people helping each other.
This forum is full of PC (Windows) gamers helping each other.

Same issue here, also on Linux. Disabling pre-caching may be a work-around but is no option in the long run since this affects other games as well.

Same issue here on a Ryzen 5 3400g APU using current Ubuntu LTS.

Given the reported hardware and distro setups, it looks like an issue with the Steam client for Linux. Maybe it's checksum related, where on startup the client checks the server and a checksum value fails, so the files are downloaded again. Or the files are OK, but there is an incorrect symlink in there somewhere and client just downloads the files again.

For me it was happening with several games, using Devuan 5 Daedalus, i5-10400, gtx 1650, latest stable kernel and driver from nvidia.com. Using Win10 again though for various reasons.

Same problem here. The download only appears if i switch from win to linux.
Manjaro kde kernel 6.7.
Same on Manjaro w/ kernel 6.12. Every reboot it needs to redownload 5-6GB of shaders and then compile Vulkan shaders as well.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
