I guess if you like the pets/companions your take may be more pleased. Had a T-Rex style critter for awhile. Really fast for riding on, but you really can't scan or do much while you ride. Got annoying when everywhere I explored there were dead critters all around me. The dino liked to kill things way too much for my liking.
Outside of the Mech AI, none of them are useful. They don't help in a fight and usually get in the way. That is kind of the same story for all the support you can get in the game. Big on cosmetic value, zero on usefulness.

Definitely adding it to my bookmarks. Such a novel idea and pretty brilliant the way he has it setup to work.
