Photo Mode crashes my PC
So, normally I couldn't care less about in game photo mode, but this game actually requires it in some cases, and in others for missions. Well, my game crashes to desktop every time I try to snap a pic in Photo Mode. I can enter and exit Photo Mode just fine if I don't take any pictures. But as soon as I click left mouse button to take a pic, the game freezes, and then I get the ever disheartened application has crashed and needs to close dialog box. Is anyone else ever experienced this, and been able to fix it? This happens in single player and multiplayer modes. Game runs fine at a mix of high and ultra at 1440p, typically get over 100fps.

Specs
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
AMD RX 6700XT (latest drivers)
32GB 3600mhz DDR4 (2x16GB)
Installed on M.2 Gen4 SSD
Windows 10 x64 latest updates

Check permissions on your folder where the photos are stored. Something about that will cause CTD if it cant write to the folder.

Any chance you can be more specific to what to look for? I'm also having this problem, but I assumed it was connected to the memory issue the game is currently having.

I never experienced this issue myself, but I remember reading about it here (i.e. related to folder permissions). Of course, I can't find it now:steamfacepalm:

I would give "all users" admin rights on that folder (as a test) and see if that helps.

My system stores them here:
D:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\96782476\760\remote\275850\screenshots

It wasn't easy finding that, so maybe I saved you some wailing and gnashing of teeth.

lol, actually, I did find it, turns out I had set up a shortcut to it at some point. Atleast, I think it's the right folder... If it doesn't work I'll check in again.

Had it similar. For me it was the GPU Driver (ATI). Windows replaced it sneakly. After i replaced it with ati original, no more Problems.

I appreciate this suggestion. Sadly, it didn't work for me. I did this, along with verifying game files, and still crashes as soon as I snap a picture. The weird thing is there are already pictures in the folder, so I have taken them before (I just didn't remember). When I get time, I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling the game, if that doesn't work, I'll try the drivers. I will update after I've done these.

I read in another thread where windows replaced the victim's video driver which cause the issue. Rolling back to the video card's driver fixed it.

Ok, so here's a weird one. I uninstalled the game then reinstalled. No luck. I uninstalled the game, then uninstalled my GPU drivers, rebooted, reinstalled latest drivers, then reinstalled the game, no luck. So then, I decided to uninstall the game, and install to a different drive. I have a dedicated SSD for my games, so this time, I installed the game to my C drive, which is a Gen3 m.2 SSD. And, although I'm getting stuttering likely due to needing to rebuild the shader cache, I am now able to take snap shots. I'm not sure how to completely knuckle this down. Either NMS does not like taking pics if the game is on a different drive then steam is installed on (steam is installed on my C drive, thus where the pictures are stored, and my game originally was installed on D drive, my dedicated SSD), or, if it has to do with the PCI-E generation. My boot drive is Gen3, and my game SSD drive is Gen4. The game on either drive plays as it should, just the snapshot mode is the only hangup I've had, outside of glitches playing in Multiplayer mode.

In any event, this seems to have solved my problem. So for anyone else, try installing the game to a different drive if you're having the same or similar problem. I do appreciate the suggestions anyway.

I hope this helps others.

***UPDATE***

Well, I was wrong. I exited the game, fired it back up, tried taking a snapshot, and it crashed. So, now I'm back to square 1. I will say though, this time, I realized my resolution was at 1080p, and I bumped it to 1440p. I'll see if that makes a difference. But I wanted to hurry up and update this that it happened again.

Never had this happen. The PC the game is played on, runs well but is regularly maintained and folders full with traditional photos can sometimes take a moment or two to display if they are fragmented. De-fragmenting the hard drive and generally having plenty of free space for photos or screenshots can help a lot for smooth running of the game and fast read and write of screenshots, especially if game screenshot folders have many, many photos.

Additionally with Steam, there is a setting to adjust the quality of screenshots to keep file sizes minimal. That might be adjusted too to help smooth photo taking.

I have this issue. Haven't managed to solved it in any way, although some people say "just wait". Well, it doesn't work for me. At this point, I just avoid taking photos. Hopefully next patch/update will fix things.

I wish it were that simple. But as I've stated, I have one of the fastest Gen4 SSDs as my game drive, and it's not full, so I don't think that's the issue. Although, my steam app is installed on my Gen3 boot drive, I've never had trouble taking screenshots in any other games such as Elite Dangerous and Valheim. It's only this game.
