Stand at your save point in freighter, make the save, try a food, reload save, write it down maybe if you get easily confused. Select different foods until you get all the frigate styles, and reload save over and over so you don't waste foods. If nothing happens that means it is a food for that style you are on. Something good might turn up, ya never know. The only problem with making them supports is they themselves never get low fuel usage but they can be good for shortening long voyages. It's all trial and error.
I don't find them often to be high stats no matter what I do - and I do understand the process fairly well at this point. I think one time I got at S class industrial w/ 45 stat, cost me a bundle. Mostly I just try and have one of each kind and a couple supports so I can add one to each mission & call it good. And they look cool. Minigame complete.
As side note, LF seem to be immune to damage during missions.
Organic frigates gives you different drops from expeditions so if you plan to get living ship for yourself to fly then those frigates helps you to get some upgrades for ship.
Fill a hauler with different food and make your frigate taste everything (they may refuse to eat some things tho), have a stack of bread or meat in your exosuit to rince their palate between dishes.
Got all my living frigates already at rank-S thanks to coordinates and for now my living frigate that got the best bonus earned +35 to combat, others have 26 to 32, some food give high bonus to 2 stats (+20) at the same time... definitely worth the trouble.
And if you write down what give your living frigates the best bonus in all the different stats, you can re-configurate them before expeditions by feeding them accordingly.
Erratum: actually, she's 38 now... she really like donuts..
