there is a way to fly the ship without the need to keep W and SHIFT pressed?

sure... switch to a controller :)

on xbox controller, you use the right trigger to take off and is also the throttle once you are flying... the B face button is the Boost button... hold both shoulder bumpers at the same time for the Pulse Engine...

I'm on KB/M and never use shift+w <- is that boost? I ask because I have a keybind that is specifically for boost (not thrust).

I understand, but I don't have a controller now I was hoping there was some option or mod for that it would be better if the controls of the ships were something like E.D

the W is to accelerate and the shift (which I changed to the right mouse button) is the boost

I boost without engaging the thrust(W)

i was being facetious about switching to a controller but yeah, you still have to hold something to make the ship go... either the throttle button (W) or the Boost button (shift?) have to be held down... if you are boosting, you don't have to hold the throttle button... some of us do just because...

I think there is a mod that acts like a cruse control. other than that, you just have to hold W. Because you know.... friction in space.

My G602 mouse has programming functions that allow setting a key function to toggle mode. A program like AutoHotkey might be able to do the same. A low tech solution might be to use weights to hold down the W and SHIFT keys. About 8-10 pennies is enough weight to hold down keys on my keyboard.

^This - easiest thing to do on PC for any game imho is to use either your programmable mouse or Autohotkey.
I have a 12-button gaming mouse, much like my old Logitech one, I have them all programmed for toggle walk, toggle fly/boost, then standard UI controls, etc. SO useful!

Now I just need to be able to find the actual walk instead of jog ability for PC. I don't like the MOD because it is one or the other. I stumbled upon a key-combo once that forced it to happen, but either I don't remember it right or it was patched out.
Playing the game on PC through Steam you can use Steam Configuration input to set up controllers or remapping keys. The controller configuration is quite complex and there may be settings available to create toggles, holds, long presses and action layers and so on. There are sliders too for fine adjustment that can be used to further customise all buttons. Legacy key remapping is available too. There is lots to understand but its worth a look as you may be able to do what you want. There also are community downloads available to try and may already have a solution.

Always fly boost only, until you need to make a delicate manouver, then up the accelerator just a little bit so you can easily dial it back down to zero or very little. Take off, point where you want to go, press boost, get close, let go of boost, it slows back down to your accelerated speed which will be about 20 or 25 if you only used boost to start.. If you come up short, accelerate a little bit, or overshoot.. turn around and accel a little bit. Holding both boost and accelerate does not go faster than boost, it just makes you faster and more difficult to control when you let go of boost. Fly safe :)

Wouldnt voice attack be an alternative? Never tried it on NMS, but in Elite Dangerous worked like a charm. Made life way better. If it works, you can go even beyond Boost. Many things will be more fun to do.
