Are custom games disallowed form MP functions?
So far as custom games go - there are 'zones' of options that have to line up to be able to join other people that fall along the lines of Creative / Normal / Survival / Permadeath. If you start a game that works with MP in one area, then change a bunch of settings to the point it no longer conforms, then it will no longer allow you to match up with other players like you did before.

i don't think it is a server issue, as my really old save does not have this issue. only new games. i tried all the new game variants and they all had the issue. don't know if there is currently a community event going on, but clicking on the new game type for that does nothing.
I would try simply disabling malwarebytes temporarily, rebooting, and giving it a shot. If it fixes it, then look into providing an exception in malwarebytes for NMS. If not... keep searching... something isn't right.
If you can't shake it loose, you can always submit a ticket through zendesk:

Better yet, it would be best to go into its settings and completely disable it, reboot so that your network settings are cleared, and then try it. You really won't know for sure until you do that.
Exiting a program that has anything to do with your network leaves all kinds of things attached to your IP, DNS cache, etc. that without knowing the commands to purge/flush all of that manually - you need to do a reboot to make sure.
But, it's up to you. I'm just passing it along.
