Look for a crashed freighter, they tend to generate deep.

As Cartman said, scan for sunken freighters or drowned shipwrecks with the nautilon, those tend to be in the deeper areas, also useful for finding an elusive rare underwater creature to complete the fauna on a planet.
I do scan for sunken wrecks (all the time), and I know they are often very deep. I just didn't realize they got THAT deep.
I was ambivalent about the "records" feature when it was first added, but now I'm going to pay more attention to it, because some of those things it tracks are actually really interesting.
