Extremely large shadercache folder
My \shadercache folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\shadercache\275850) has grown to over 63 GB. Is this a reasonable size for NMS?

The file C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\shadercache\275850\fozpipelinesv6\steamapp_pipeline_cache.foz accounts for all 63+GB.

In over 1100 hours I have literally never deleted this file.

Mine is over 400 megs. I play on Steam Proton on Ubuntu Linux if it matters.

That's most certainly not normal. Here's a step-by-step to fully clear the cache, if you'd like:
  1. If NMS is running, shut it down.
  2. Open Steam and go to Steam>Settings>Shader Pre-Caching.
  3. Uncheck "Enable Shader Pre-Caching".
  4. Shut down Steam completely.
  5. Navigate to your Steam shadercache for No Man's Sky. It'll be found in your library folder, ..\steamapps\shadercache\275850\.
  6. You'll find multiple folders in the 275850 folder. Delete them all.
  7. Update your video drivers. Do this before restarting Steam.
  8. Restart Steam.
  9. Go back to Steam>Settings>Shader Pre-Caching.
  10. Re-check "Enable Shader Pre-Caching" as well as "Allow background processing of Vulkan Shaders".
  11. Right-click No Man's Sky in your library and hit Properties>Local Files>Verify integrity of game files...
  12. Once it's done verifying, launch the game.
This will purge the cache, ensure any new cache is accurate to the most recent drivers, and make sure that Steam re-updates its cache manifest associated with NMS.

I'm probably just stupid, but I don't even have a folder for the NMS app ID (275850) in my shadercache folder.

Make sure you are looking in the shadercache folder on the same drive as the one where NMS is installed if you have more than one drive set up for steam installation.

Also, is it possible you already have the caching options turned off in steam?

Yep, I must've disabled Pre-caching long ago. That was the cause of my missing shadercache folder. Thanks y'all. Confirmed, I'm just stupid.

Thank you Azure Fang. I will do what you recommend.

Nope, you're not stupid. Many people run this way and it works just fine. I don't seem to build up much in that location. Most of mine are in the shadercache folder that is within the game folder. It's really luck of the draw as to whether steam has already got compiled shaders for your specific config, so it may not have been using them anyway.

I have only like 800MB?
