What is your preferred multi-tool weapon?
There was a thread a few days ago made by someone who thought the boltcaster was the bees knees and that it was bad game design because it made ALL other weapons useless.

In another thread, someone commented that they always use just the blaze javelin, because they find the stun it can do superior in combat.

Personally I find the boltcaster to be very unsatisfying to use and I only use the blaze javelin when I feel like pretending I'm a Vy'keen sniper.

I'm just curious, what everyone's preferred weapon for the multi-tool is, in the current state of the game. Mention what difficulty you plan on for "On-foot" combat as well, if you could.

My answer is:
Mostly, the Pulse Spitter. I do prefer the scatter blaster, but it doesn't have good range so I rarely use it since the waypoint update and addition of supercharge slots. (I play on Highest difficulty).

Blaze javelin for sniper fire
Pulse splitter for mid range continuous fire
Scatter blaster for up close and personal.

is the blaze javlin the one you have to aim and hold while it charges and then fires? if yes, i have a love/hate relationship with it... i hate the firing delay...

i've gotten to where i use the pulse spitter or bolt caster (i forget which... not the default weapon) and the blaster (shotgun?) most of the time... especially when they are fully modded...

Default is Boltcaster, it fires blue bullets. The Pulse Spitter, also called the fire-hose by some, fires the green blobs.

And yes, the Blaze Javelin is a charge-fire weapon, where you hold to charge and then fire. But so is the Neutron cannon. Blaze Javelin is the one that fires red beams, the Neutron cannon...uh...you know, been so long since i used one I have no idea what it looks like when it fires.

thanks jaggid... the pule spitter is the one i add with all its mods except the ricochet mod... that thing is dangerous... there's another mod for one of the others, i think, that is similar... i leave that one alone, too... but i may be thinking of one of the starship wep mods... i know one of them has the ammo just keep going and going and going until it hits something... i don't use that one, either... don't want to hit a freighter by accident, eh? :)

i think the neutron cannon lobs like grenades... i find it too hard to aim so that's another one i don't use...

Hahah, yah, I remember the last time I installed that was during the original run of the Expedition 7. I forgot why I never use it on any saves.....and then did the required derelict freighter with the ricochet module installed. Was a really good reminder.

The boltcaster also has a ricochet module upgrade, btw, which is why you are indeed remembering two of them.

experimental pistol as default MT for the scanning + boltcaster for casual kills (fauna etc.)
alien mid-rifle with pulse spitter as main combat but this will be swapped out for a sentinel rifle as soon as i find one with nicely grouped SC slots.
PS. i shove the ricohet modules in cos they up the damage and i luv trick shots (Alien 4)

You know, I avoid it mainly because of derelict freighters and how it breaks the nests....but my new tactic on those is just to run through and let the nests spawn behind me, so perhaps I SHOULD start slotting the ricochet module. It sounds fun.

That's my favorite model and color scheme.
As far as ability, I only care about damage, not which damage type it is. On all my developed saves (not beginner saves), I always have between 4 and 6 multitools that are in various stages of development. Whichever multitool is currently delivering the most damage is the one I am currently using.

Whichever one I'm carrying. I'll go toe-to-toe with Sentinel Walkers with the same C-class pistol I started out with, using a mining laser and a force field to melt them down no problem.

If I'm actually engaging on purpose, then it really depends on what I am engaging with and where.

Specifically:

For Abandoned Buildings ripe with monster eggs, give me a plasma launcher every single time. I'll gladly stand back at the extreme range of a plasma grenade and blast those hammer-headed bugs to bits with glee.

If I'm infiltrating a Derelict Freighter, I'll take a Blaze Javelin every time.

Raiding a Supply Depot? I'll do that from my ship, thanks.

Storming a Sentinel Control Relay? I'll take a boltcaster.

Hunting abyssal horrors deep under the water? A pulse spitter is great, so is Scatter Blaster.

Fending off a Sentinel incursion at my settlement? Give me a Neutron Cannon or a Blaze Javelin.

Different tools for different jobs. A shotgun is great for close-quarters combat, but makes a lousy sniper rifle.

It depends on the situation for me. If i'm fighting the alien pods on the derelict freighters, I use the neutron canon and the paralysis mortar. For waves of sentinels on the ground I use the pulse spitter and then the paralysis mortar along with it when the walkers show up.

Pulse spitter and paralysis mortar for me. I'm too dumb to leave the geology cannon installed without killing myself.
