The game technical answer is your first death grave contained your stuff. When you died the 2nd, 3rd, or 100th time before collecting the stuff...you had no stuff in inventory so your grave is empty.
i collected much to many of everything for later use in the expedition. all gone :(
yeah. alright game. i see how it is.
why stand around waiting to die?
there is no shame in running away
thankfully most games offer different difficulties. some enjoy permadeath (this is too stressfull for me, i need at least the chance to get stuff back. but i dont want it too easy either).
you can single adjust many difficulty settings too and most of them do crossplay.
I manage to carry on, it was tougher having to gather up what I lost, but educational. More prepared if it was to happen again.
In OP's scenario, the game won't let you call in your ship until you wanted level is down. Depending on hazard protection, that can be a tall order. Sometimes just digging a hole is not enough to stop them looking for you. In theory, you can make it work, but in a storm with poor visibility and a bunch of sentinels...it can be hard to put it all together.
