No Man's Sky

Xbox One controller and Steam Deck controls no longer work natively.
I haven't played No Man's Sky for about a year and when I played it on my Deck then, the controller input worked flawlessly no problems. Now suddenly it seems that they updated No Man's Sky to no longer work with controller input natively anymore and now depends on using Steam Input as a way to detect a controller and therefore button control icons then are displayed in menus and in-game. Most of the time, it doesn't work and I need to restart the game multiple times for it to work with the Xbox controller but does not work with the Steam Deck AT ALL. I've uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times and it still doesn't detect Steam Deck controls.

Update: I got it to work natively on both my gaming desktop PC and my Steam Deck. All I had to do was to disconnect from my wifi and then start up No Man's Sky. My controller was recognized right away every time I booted the game.

I have to power up my PS5 controller first; before launching the game, or else the game will not recognize it all. Sorry about the steam deck thing though. That is probably more Steam's fault then HelloGames'.
There is a lot on these forums about Steam Configuration and it is very likely a Steam issue that should solve the problem. There is a lot of helpful information to check and read, and a lot to copy and paste here. In summary it can help to switch Steam UI to the Big Picture mode when customising controllers. That is more reliable in saving and deleting old steam configurations. Also check steam General configurations is not overriding localised game controller management.

Also if the steam configuration controller settings are corrupt (personal saves and local saves configurations) delete them before downloading the Official controller set ups. Good practice for any games using controllers. Then customise on top of a clean official downloaded setup, which is always wise if a developer updates their controller functions (like adds new button commands) Hello Games have not done this in recent updates but possibly if you have not played the game for a year one update (maybe over a year ago?) added new functionality. One function I can think of is the Power Divert control using up on the D-Pad to divert power to weapons, engines, balanced or shields.

Try searching the forums for anything to do with steam configuration, controller functionality as there are lots of explanations which hopefully will solve your particular issue. Good luck.

Lastly Cloud saves might also be overriding game settings so maybe check there too for any possible conflict.

One link here for you as a start but is not steam deck specific.

Thank you for this answer! Quite thoughtful. I will definitely try deleting all my cloud saves and back them up somewhere and see if that fixes this issue. There may be possible conflicts happening that I'm not aware of causing this. Thank you!
