Multiplayer broken?
I started a new game and progressed to the point where it's asking me to warp to a new system. I then joined my son's game who has over 200 hours in the game. Things are really janky. I don't know if this is expected or what, but parts of his base are missing (like stairs and parts of the ceiling) on my screen, but not on his... he's seeing things that I can't see... like some miner for example. I'm not sure. And I'm seeing low level sentinels that he can't see, and they can see us through our base walls, etc. I haven't played in a few years so I'm not familiar with the new major updates. It seems very buggy. Is this because I haven't progressed far enough? Is this expected?

That's typical for Multiplayer in NMS. D-sync'd animals and sentinels, half loaded bases. Seeing others running around shooting at nothing. If you were on a stormy planet you might see a storm while your son see's clear skies.

The parts not loading in are due to limited server resources. Usually, if you wait for a few minutes, the base should load in. If not, try going to the base from a teleporter (e.g. the one at the space station). If that doesn't work, you might need to either reload your save or close and reopen your game (just make sure you make a save before you try any of these!).

Much appreciated, the host is on a laptop so that makes sense.

Beyond just slow server action, it is really common (at least for me) to get building and then forget to reload my base to the server so visitors will see everything up to date. If you don't upload, they will just see the base as of the last time it was uploaded.

The whole server refresh can take up to 24 hours depending on how many players are in-game. Right after an update, it can be even longer if things are broke. I am not sure if they suspend updates until they have a cure or if the bug(s) create a cascade failure of the refresh script.

It is also worth saying that multiplayer has never fully worked right. This is a solo game that they are trying to bolt multiplayer onto, isn't working very well yet.

For the sentinels issue check you both have the same difficulty settings. I think they are affected by the foot combat one though am not sure. If he has it set to none and you have it on say, standard then that could be the reason you are seeing sentinels and he isn't.

Thanks everyone for the input.

Actually, I should clarify. He picked a sentinel fight, and we both are getting attacked by one set of sentinels... it seemed most of them were of the purple variety. But I also had some of the basic 1.0 sentinels attacking just me that he couldn't see. They were much weaker as they were geared toward my loadout (although with just the basic mining laser I wasn't doing much to them either). The purple ones he was fighting I could barely scratch.
