WTF Is this snapping system for building?
Anyone have any idea why a square piece of floor only has two snapping points unless you randomly remove certain other pieces that are in no way interfering with the open space?

It's honestly hard to explain other than a door that is 1x1 will not snap on ALL 4 SIDES of a 1X1 block for seemingly no reason. Anyone have tips on this janky build system and why snapping points decide whether or not they want to exist?

GOD yes, this build system is some of the jankiest crap I have ever seen and I don't understand why. Some of the snapping points make literally no sense or flat won't work properly.

I've had better luck snapping floors to walls than floors to floors, so I'm often placing temporary walls. It's awkward.

How is it with square pieces? Essentially I was building a garage on my new 2 story base, and i wanted there to be an entrance to it from both floors, at the same position. The 2nd floor connection to the garage has an overlook with a single wide staircase going down one side. However for some ungodly reason, instead of having a flush door there, I have to go into main house with essentially a mud room for a door to exist there.

My explanation is probably ineligible without pictures to show.

Yeah pictures would help, I'm scratching my head trying to help : )
For complex connections free placement is a useful mode to switch to when building. Other parts can also be used as 'scaffolds' to position, slide or rotate stubborn parts into place, then remove the scaffold parts.

The thread link below may offer some useful tips on using free placement and when to use that mode. The build camera mode is also useful to making building easier to manage especially on larger or more intricate builds.

Yeah, I think I'd have to see a screenshot to understand. But I think the temporary walls are worth a shot, anyway.

Lol it's sometimes like a wild animal, you have to tame it and get the hang of it. Snapping works with complex situations depending how you approach the angle. Sometimes it slightly hint the placement is available in semi transparant, but then you need to figure out with direction you want to point for it to register opague. The difficult thing is it is sometimes a few pixels. I usually approach from diiagonal top or down.

If it is really hard, then I build panels and walls to work my way around and snap from the other side lol, or create more snapping points to get more chance.

Also, stickers are evil. They obstruct snapping invisibly.

I'm wondering the same thing, the building in this game is some of the jankiest I've ever dealt with. I'm still very new to this game, only around 50 hours or so, but this type of building system has been used in games for ages, you'd think they'd have it figured out by now. And this is me coming from Satisfactory, I'm literally in hell. From the best building system I've ever used, to the worst. Crazy.

I hope that they have solved this issue when Light No Fire is launched.

The true end game boss, fer real. I know what you are saying and I hate this so much.

(and whats with the second ghost outline? i still dont get it and I have played a little bit of NMS over the years. built a thing or two also)

Some of the problem is a semi-glitchy placement system... but some of the problem might be that snap points disappear if you get too close. You can see an example of this by placing a battery or solar panel, then trying to attach a power cable to it while standing right in front of it.

If I find I can't place something in a particular position, the first thing I try is backing up a meter or two; I often find that the "proximity bubble" around my character is blocking my ability to snap to the position I actually want.

For this reason, I highly recommend learning to use the build camera; press "B" on PC, or L3 (click the left stick) on a console controller to toggle it on or off. The build camera is also super-useful for building in a hostile environment; park your character safely inside, then ride the drone to do all that outside scaffolding without caring whether it's currently raining 1000 degree radioactive acid.

Think I'm going to need more context. I was sure I've seen a similar issues having read this.
I loaded up a save on one of the floating island and was able to lay one "small wooden" square down, and then attach doors on all sides.

What I do not get is trying to make a closet of sorts with the 1x1 doors on a 2x2 floor panel to make a 1x1 stair case on the 2x2 floor panel. The stair case is boarded by the 2x2 angular piece and fail at putting a 1x1 door on the opposite side of the stair.. (A closet under the 1x1 stair case.)

There are a number of 2x2 parts that will not snap with certain 1x1 parts. You just need to work around the limitation by using temporary "helper" parts. Build an extra 1x1 tile off to the side, snap your 1x1 doorway to it instead of the 2x2 tile, and then delete the extra afterwards.

Also, use the freecam view when building. Lots of snapping issues can be resolved simply by moving the camera around a bit.

It's not great. Fallout 4's is much worse.

"You can only snap one thing to a snapable edge." That stair won't snap to a fully assembled floor, but it will snap to the floor above, with the opening... see?!? That stair has a snapable edge on both ends. So happy when the video below explained that.

Video helped me a lot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFxwC2ykZoU , little tricks, things I used to do in Fallout 4, like how to place one floor exactly on top of another (raise something by one floor thickness)

Yes, sometimes it can be difficult to get flooring to add to flooring..... i find walking further away often fixes it.

And it refuses to let you add flat roofing while you are inside, which is also annoying.... standing further away outside fixes that.

As for walls and doorways, well, they seem to be the opposite - these ones you often have to stand close to get them to go in the right spot.
