Strongest Multi Tool? Shotgun?
I've been away for a while and see there's been a few major updates since I've been gone, including a staff, and some other things I don't recognize.
I tried using S class upgrades on different weapons to see which can get the most DPS, as well as different configurations of the upgrades to see what positioning yielded higher numbers.
I don't remember the exact results, but the shotgun gave me better results when fighting, followed by the green burst gun assuming I landed the shots. The Red beam sniper gun sounded better than my results said, so I want to see if there's a different answer after the updates so I know what to invest towards.

The guns didn't seem as fun to me compared to other shooter games, but I think that's since there's no enemies that shoot back besides robots. Like sentient enemies that shoot at you. I don't know how to explain it.

I would bet on Neutron Cannon being the best these days ... but in fairness, as you eluded to, the Sentinels {no matter what difficulty} can be dealt with easily with any of the games weapons. Neutron Cannon does feel more like "easy mode" to me though.

Shotgun is nothing to laugh at though for sure lol.

That's probably because you're looking for a shooter in a game that is an exploration sandbox. You are not going to find the kind of depth a shooter has in weapons, attachments, ammo, etc. NMS just isn't built for that.

If you find a Sentinel multitool, a runic multitool or a staff, you can install the standard mining beam next to the none standard mining beam. Then get as many mining speed upgrades as you can get in there. After that, you mining beam will have the highest DPS out of all weapons, since mining speed simple increase the damage the beam does on target.
Use your supercharged slots form the optical drill module and for the advanced mining laser module to get even higher mining speed.

I only fiddled with the guns a few times, because they are pretty boring overall, but it simply doesn't really matter which one you use. The shotgun got a tad more important with the abandoned freighters, but that's it. There are no enemies in the game that require real strategies, so every gun works. The red laser beam can be quite handy with the stun mod, but I even fight Sentinels with a buffed mining laser, when I'm bored. That one can reach absurd power, too.

That's a bad excuse for lazy gamedesign.

I'll have to look up how to get the Sentinel Multitool since I think that was after I left. But I heard of it. I also don't know how to get a runic or staff so I'll look those up too. Thanks. :D

you can install the mining laser only in the Atlas Staff from the Expedition. because it has a runic lense as mining beam installed already. all other staffs have a normal mining laser

It all comes down to preference, but for close in- Scatter Blaster. Helps to have a Mech AI fully upgraded lobbing missiles at the big dogs while you focus on the repair and shield bots.

Any of the weapons are good, to be honest. Plenty good enough for anything you need if you get 3 S-Class Mods for that weapon. That's to say nothing about Supercharging it.

Even the lowly boltcaster can tear the sentinels to shreds, even walkers, with 3 S-class upgrades. I tend to favor a pulse spitter though, as it fires faster so misses aren't quite as costly, but whatever you want.

Mostly it comes down to what TYPE of weapon that you enjoy using the most. do you like shotguns? then get one! Would you rather have an assault carbine? Use the boltcaster. do you wanna spray and pray? Pulse spitter. Do you like the Metroid Games? the Neutron Cannon is basically Samus's arm cannon. Works the same way.

I actually use my maxed out mining laser, it kills quite quickly lol...but the scatter blaster one shots things if you get swarmed or dont want to mess around. All I ever need, (mining, terrain digging, and scatter blaster) on one weapon.

I just use the boltcaster with X upgrades and the occasional harmonic scrap upgrades. Works fine.
puls spitter + 3 perfect x upgrades. melts everything in seconds. even walkers

I've got about 150 hours now and I've experimented with all of them. In my experience there's a different weapon that's good against different enemies, so I carry a few different multi-tools on my hotbar.

  • regular sentinels - you can basically use what you want, but I go with phase spitter (green machinegun) most of the time. Good damage, no overheating, and does dots in case my aim is a bit off and I need some help finishing them off. The medics make easy targets and then you can burn down the rest with ease. Would avoid the shotgun here as the damage falloff is heavy and all they have to do is back up a little from you, which they will.

  • hunting - Blaze Javelin really shines here. They can't run from you when you can hit from this far away and the stun is also really nice. Shotgun can be really good to if you're willing to walk up to them before shooting them.

  • bio-horror - shotgun all the way. You can wipe out hordes of them pretty effortlessly. One shot-one kill and the rof is very good. Could also use a boltcaster but I would just use a shotgun.

  • dissonance - These enemies can be tricky because they're all medics and they have more health than normal sentinels. I was trying to use my phase spitter and struggling to kill one before having to reload. Switched to the Neutron gun and had much better results. You want to try to fire fully charged shots as fast as possible. With a little practice you can two or three shot one before their buddies can even react to try to heal them.
