Galactic Map, the most annoying aspect of NMS :( Any good tutorials out there?
I'm mostly enjoying NMS but if I ever quit the game it would be because of the Galactic Map. For the love of all humanity I can't figure out how to use it. It must be one of the weirdest, most unintuitive game interfaces I have ever seen.

There is a star system that I have been to previously but there is no station in it so I can't just teleport to it, and I want to go back to scan the planets. I've set up a custom waypoint on the Discoveries page. I open the map, I select Destination Custom Waypoint and No Filters in the map's menus up top. I clearly see my destination system with an exclamation point icon next to it and there is a blue line linking to it from my current location. There is no way to select it or any other intermediate systems along the blue line. The map just jumps around to all other unvisited systems as I move the mouse. They're all within my warp range. This happens with every system that I've set a custom waypoint on. Why can't just have a cursor to click on my destination on the map? I can't select any of previously visited systems on the map either, I have to teleport to them, same behavior: the map moves around "avoiding" the systems I want to select and selects everything around them instead.

All information and tutorials I found are outdated. It's ironic that the game update name is Waypoints since the very waypoints feature is so dysfunctional.

It's the Hearkis system in the center of the map, I've been there, can't be that far:

if you have a waypoint, when you look at the galactic map, there should be an option in the top middle to select the path to that waypoint... it is up there with the "current mission", "galactic core", and other path selection options... on my controller, i use my left and right D-Pad buttons to walk through the available path options...

Yes, that's what I do. And there is a blue path linking my current location with the destination but I can't select the destination system. There is an exclamation point icon next to it. I can jump to random systems but not to any of my waypoints or any system I have vistited already.

Here is a short guide I made years ago, it's still up-to-date, good luck.

Thank you! You're a life saver!!!!

WSAD......move around

I expect arrows to move things around, I'm not a WSAD player so it didn't occur to me to try that. It's actually in the control settings! Yeah, once I move closer to the system I can select it. Yay!

The fact this is still up to date after years of development is telling :steamfacepalm:

The map never made sense to me to be honest. Like in the upper left where you see the entire galaxy and would like to go a certain direction. That seems hard to do. Its like you can only move towards the center or away from the center. For example, I keep trying to get to the far left of the galaxy by moving away from it (with light years numbers going up) but it never goes where I want it. I usually end up in the lower left corner. Is there a better way to navigate from a galaxy perspective?

Maybe there's a galactic coordinate system mod? A mod where you can see on the galactic map where it takes you and then it gives you the glyphs.

It has been a while by now (2017!) but it's important to add that using SHIFT together with WASD keys will move you faster around, using CTRL even faster, and you have control of the direction with the mouse.

What I'm still missing the most is: There are no distance units in the Discoveries Page telling you how far a system is, and on the galaxy map you cannot center the view over a custom waypoint, adding these 2 features HG would make many players happy I think. There was a time where distance units were in the Disco page, but HG did remove them later much to my dislike.

actually that gives me an idea

I do have a base computer on the way far left side of the Eissentam galaxy

If I try those glyphs in a different galaxy, i bet the location will be similar

I do know that putting all suns at the glyph portal always takes you about 5k light years from the core so maybe it applies to other glyphs as well. I would still love to know what direction i'm going though

welcome to the game...
Lots of fun to be had, just learn how to search you-tube and the wiki. Your answer is already in both of those places.
fandom wiki is most complete.

That's brilliant! Let us know how it goes

its fine once you realise its a map not a GPS

It's easier now but the galactic map still leaves a lot to be desired. Yeah, lack of distances on Discovery pages sucks too. I guess representing graphically a Galaxy on a small computer screen is challenging. But there is room for improvement there for sure.

I had the same problem before I figured out you can move your POV - left, right, forward, back - with the wasd keys. Right click for free look and then zoom in closer to your target.
NZ.Zero Dec 19, 2022 @ 3:03pm
yeah thats true. ignore all the preselected nonsense, just right click straight away, then WASD around, click for data, R I think it is for more data .. its pretty good.

But yeah the console version i.e. the pre-selected stuff is hard to use and galaxy jumps are tricky.
