To the Linux users of NMS
I'm curious which distros are being used. I have Linux Mint on a laptop, but haven't done gaming on it. I plan on switching my desktop pc to Linux so was just wondering what distros people are gaming with. Also, as I did do some searching, has anyone tried DraugerOS?

i'm on ubuntu 20.04lts. i really should update it to 22.04lts, but general support lasts in 2025 and 24.04lts is likely to be around before that point.

i use Kubuntu 20.04 LTS... i forget which steam package i installed but ISTR it was a .deb... i've not had any problems with NMS or any other games i have on steam... i do/did also use Lutris and have a few GOG games but steam is really the easiest...

Ubuntu Studio 20.04. Works like a charm.

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.

No to DraugerOS. Don't get me wrong, there are always 'better' versions of Linux but Ubuntu strikes a good balance between features and not pissing me off.

I did kill off snaps though :), took forever and a day to do updates.

How would you characterize performance of NMS on Linux?

Mostly crap, as usual for non-native games. I dual boot Windows for Windows games, because it provided 100% of the available performance with 0% of the issues and time.

That said, in my testing it was easier to get it running in the Ubuntu based distos I tried than it was with the Devuan (plain Debian) setup I "main". I tried it in Mint 20, Ubuntu 20.04, PopOS something, and MX Linux something (customised Debian).

I use Mint MATE on my laptop, because it "just works" with essentially zero effort, unlike the slog one must go through to get all the parts of Devuan working correctly. Not a knock against plain Debian, just that's kinda the whole point of the *buntu distros.

Point being, you probably aren't going to get it run any better with a different distro, but it *will* run better in Windows.

Edit:
"Mostly crap"
- With one distro it took 45 minutes on the star field screen without loading. I was curious. Just would not work. That was Devuan.
- Mint MATE runs at a lower frame rate and with waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more hitching / "lag" than in Windows.
- Objectively, the other distros I tried didn't run any better than Mint.

Ps. I've been using Linux since 1998, with at least thousands of hours installing and configuring Slackware and Debian based systems (and other stuff in there too, of course, because everyone tries all the distros, right? And the BSDs! lol...). I "mained" it for many years, but now I just find it more convenient to use it in a bunch of purpose built VMs from a Windows host. Though I use a bare metal installation for audio production and some other specific tasks.

we have absolutely no problems and, in many cases, our games seem to run better and smoother than others running them on their native OSes... we regularly see users complaining of problems on their windows systems that turn out to be something outside the game... we just don't seem to see these things on any of our installs... (eg: some unknown external process stealing focus from the game and the users think the game is tabbing out :NotLikeThis: )

with that said, i will also note that not all Linux are built the same... personally speaking, i've found Kubuntu with the KDE window manager to provide us with the best all-around capabilities and enjoyment for gaming and just general system usage... note, also, that we only use the LTS flavors of (k)Ubuntu... the intermediate versions are a bit on the "bouncy" side for our tastes...

we're anxious to test other distributions like Devuan but feel that we must let it mature some more before it reaches the level that our current installation provides us...

I have zero problems, seemingly less than many Windows users do. Performance of most games was better under Steam than on native Windows. Stability was no contest in favour of Linux. NMS runs fine for me.

I am a long term Linux user though and maybe that helped. I'm also using Xubuntu which uses a very lightweight window manager and that's configured to only use the graphics card as a display. (No advanced acceleration tricks enabled).

No issues with it aside from a very occasional hard crash that requires me to terminate the process. all the rest of the time the performance is well above excellent, never really dropping below 120fps at any point. (that's with full graphics across the board aside from motion blur which i always disable).

of course that all depends on the hardware and how much of the software is up to date.

Current Debian runs NMS just fine on i7-6700 64gig and 1070. Have to install Nvidia drivers and its dependencies etc. Runs X4 ok too. Using Xfce.

I decided to use Mint. Working very nicely and it's the distro I've been using when I have a pc/laptop to put linux on. Now it's all I'm using.

Currently on Pop OS 22.04 LTS. Game worked out of the box and continues to work when i go to and from my win 10 drive for vr gameplay.
(VR gameplay didnt work, but thats to be blamed on steam and nvidia since im using an nvidia card)

running arch linux is continuously doing a greater workflow at running windows games than when i used windows 10, nothing bad to report besides save files in unusual locations making local backup a bit to get used with. not good performance for now since my old low end pc is dying at this point so i bought another that will fix all the bits of possible stutter and low fps once it arrives in shipping sometime after weekend.
