Is there a level limit for digging in the Ancient Ruins sites?
I started a new game and there seems to be a force field around the ruins I have found.

In NMS it's very similar to Minecraft - you have a certain hard cap (Bedrock) on how deep down you're allowed to dig. Sometimes stuff can be placed further down beyond that cap, but you're still not allowed to access it.

But I can't even get to the ruins. There seems to be a force field preventing me from getting close. I have a screen shot of me standing on the field. It is invisible and I can see my shadow on the ground below me! I can't figure out how to post the screenshot. I don't seem to have any option menu here.

yes, there is limit to how far you can dig, and that edge has it's own topography (ie. not a perfect sphere)
Sometimes a planet will have a very shallow range in which you can dig, and buried stuff can often end up being out of reach. If this happens, then just move on and find another location.

Now that does sound odd... No idea what's happening there...

I'm sure there's a better method for sharing steam screenshots, but I'm not sure what it is... so here's what I've found works...

open your profile page,
select the screenshots for NMS,
pick the image you want and right click, then select open in new tab.
copy the link.

any other method I've tried recently doesn't give a preview here...

It won't even let me copy the link.:steamfacepalm:

if you haven't already done a save and reload, i would... if that doesn't work, if using steam, i would use the verify installed files thing in the NMS properties... if that doesn't work, i would go find another ruin or drop/reset the mission...

HAH!
Hmm, that's a first person view and is not really informative enough. It does sound and look a bit weird now with the additional info. Can you enter third person view mode and take a screenshot using the Photo Mode to capture a bigger picture with all the surroundings (can be done via the "X"-button menu)?

All files verified. I'll try. I don't know if I'm still near the ruins...
No, I moved on.

Possible item still there, just gone or glitched? I've seen this with ships, and when you remove scavenged ones, there is still a box around that area where you can't walk .

What? An ancient ruin? It's there. I can see it. You can just see parts of it in my screenshot. I just can't get to it.
some ruin parts are just decor. You can't dig them

Yeah, that's pretty odd...
My guess is it just didn't load in correctly, so a save/reload might be enough to fix the issue.
Either way, unless the issue repeats at another ruin you visit, then I wouldn't worry about it... Just pretend it was a mirage and move on, there are trillions of other ruins out there ;)

Following is not in regards to the 'force-field' the OP has encountered but with ancient ruins dig sites you can actually glitch below the bedrock.

I dig out key number one inside the square building, key two right beside it, scan for the 79 unit away key to the right (past the above ground ramp) which is the deepest keys of all. After you dig as far as possible towards this key, change your MT terrain manipulator to fill back in/repair the damage. The game then glitches you underneath and you have a full view of the ruin.

Proceed to get this deepest key, walk up the stairs and retrieve the other one there. There is also a gravitino ball right there which you can get, if you do, head back down the stairs until the sentinel search has abated.

Walk back up the stairs (still all underground) follow the horizontal ramp and jump down to the actual treasure crate.

Once you retrieved the treasure you can just jump off the ramp and fall further down at which point the game glitches you back above ground.

Oh, that's interesting, I never thought to try glitching under the surface onto a buried platform to prevent falling so far you reset to the surface... Thanks for sharing. Sounds like some fun can be had messing with that
