Did you have a fleet command room on your freighter in the expedition? I've no idea if that makes a difference, but I had one and didn't experience the crash. Another option is to edit the json file for the expedition so that collecting it is optional. It should still be available/unlocked to claim from the Quicksilver vendor.
Maybe the fact he never even boarded his freighter makes a difference?
I know the bug previously didn't have any workaround (other than editing the json file), so maybe it still doesn't. Those of us who did not crash might just be lucky. Or they did fix it, but the fix isn't working for everyone.
@Patupi, one other thing I can think of is to ask if you use mods or not? If they did fix it, a mod that is from previous to the fix could be the reason for your issue. I did have that crash during the original run of Adrift. I did not have it for the redux, which is why I assumed it was fixed.
1 brand new save, 2 existing saves.
1 existing main save already owned a freighter and also already had the Ship of the Damned.
I thought of testing declining the free Freighter awarded from completing the Derelict milestone before trying to claim the Ship of the Damned, but since OP had definitely claimed it, it is probably not worth bothering with that test.
None of my runs copied anything from main save into the expedition. I will do a test of that.
Edit: was it one of the later 'staring into the void' things? The dreaming? I only got one brief appearance of the frigate early on, and one in the middle (phase 3 I think). Had the last of the void things where you just use pule drive and drift, then the staring up at the sky. Neither of those had the frigate turn up.
Another option is to edit your save file to just mark that phase as complete. You basically will bypass the crash by not doing the step, but telling your save file you have done it.
This is the relevant section of C:\Users\[WindowsUsername]\AppData\Roaming\HelloGames\NMS\st_[profleID]\cache\SEASON_DATA_CACHE.JSON
If you hadn't completed all other milestones, I would have suggested trying switching the rewards around with another one. AFAIK, you'll need a Save Editor to award the frigate.
--Edit, Ninja'd by JE again.--
This indicates that setting to optional does unlock the frigate at the QS vendor in your main save, if so, problem solved.
